Just thought we ought to know more about each other if we’re to work together.” You attempt to reassure her. “Would you mind to show me one of your works when we return to the surface?”
“I haven’t drawn in years. When your life runs so short, such frivolity falls by the wayside." Her voice grows weary. “I left that all far behind me.”
“Well.. I brought mine.” You scoff with pride. You root through your rucksack–from it, you pull a small, pulpy magazine, still kept well in spite of its age. Not the crown jewel of your collection, but an old favorite–one that might withstand the wear of combat. You’ve brought it out to the battlefield before for good luck. “Take a look. The Blackguard Wolf Knight of Wirt, vol. 2, #6. With all the illustrations intact.”
Emilia stares, her mouth agape. “You brought a children’s book to the CATACOMBS?”
“It is not a children’s book. It’s for all ages!” You snap back. “And it’s a serious work of literature. It deals with a half-monster mercenary’s adventures on the battlefield. It wrestles with all sorts of existential and horror themes, and the artwork masterfully and tastefully depicts the fights with such excellent linework that truly–”
The berserker, rather rudely, cuts off your spiel with laughter. You grow hot in the face.
“..I’m sorry,” She wipes a tear from her cheek. You’ve never heard her laughter before. “I.. don’t mean to insult your interests. But.. you don’t look the sort. You come off as your average blue blood with a stick up the ass. To bring a magazine like that down here..”
“Well, you hardly look like a children’s book illustrator, either.” You shoot back.
“I suppose I don’t.” The berserker smiles weakly. She lowers her head. “..I.. I want to return to the surface. I miss it. I-I don’t even want to be immortal all that much–I just want to prolong my death, just for a little while more. I want to see the sun again..”
