>roll 6d100 and for simplicity (because a similar GURPS space section is 30 pages of orbital mechanics modelling axial tilt) what happens is that I just say if you find a G, K star, you get a vaguely habitable zone comfortable planet orbiting it. If you find an M star, there is probably some dead ice world but uninhabitable without appropriate technology. If you get the younger stars there may be a dose of radiation... but also some chance for strange artifacts and phenomena, hehe. The oldest stars and stellar remnants have the best chance for relic technologies, these are very hard to roll and find though. In terms of mining, older stars are better (ie longer lifespan more mature stellar nucleosynthesis - better chance of high atomic number heavy elements within vicinity of the star, I hope that is correct lol)
As you are not in the science spaceship the EXPEDITIONARY RESEARCH VESSEL, if you find a planet there is a chance it is already inhabited or even hostile. (QM: I will make some rolls). If it is some feral world, you could just attempt to construct an orbital outpost of some form and carry on mining or developing it whilst the cavemen grunt and point at the appearance of a new and unusual star in the sky. However if it is a high tech and hostile world, you may be attacked...
It is also possible to just survey the planet, and sell the obtained data for ISD. The mining vessel can do this but the science ship is probably overall better with more sensors etc, so you might not get paid as much as you potentially could achieve.
