You moved without a second thought, stepping in front of Mina and gesturing for Harpy to lower her wing. They all stared at you in mild surprise.
“Then I'll have to be the one to disappoint you.” you declared, meeting her burning gaze with a challenging look of your own. “Your people weren't the only ones killed. So any justice on ‘the people's’ behalf will need representation from all of them.”
Mina stared down at you for a good long while. You sensed no real malice from her, but you were prepared to act, nonetheless.
There was a tense silence, where everyone held their breaths and waited for the other to make a move…and Mina broke the stalemate by taking a large step back, and a deep, calming breath.
“Very well. It is as you say.” she conceded, folding herself in a deep, respectful bow. “As much as I despise Varnae and his collaborators, I feel as if it would be remiss of me to challenge your authority after everything you have done here. I, and House Morvayne, are forever in your debt. If you are ever in need, do consider reaching out to us.”
Beast's expression didn't change, but you noticed his muscles relax slightly upon learning that he wouldn't be turned into a vampire slave.
You smiled warmly at her, and mirrored her gesture. From her bent position, she glanced up at you in surprise.
“Same here. I don’t know where we'd be without you. You recognized the threat that Varnae posed, made a plan to save your brother and the rest of the council, and even found a way to trap Varnae and turn his Kaiju against him. We owe you, big-time.”
James nodded his agreement, looking a little more present in this conversation. He was also a lot cleaner, thanks to Mina.
“You helped me prevent my father from unleashing chaos onto this world. I owe you everything.” he said, turning to bow as well.
As her back straightened, Mina’s eyes crinkled, and she placed a hand over her mouth.
“So…we're not biting him.” B concluded, disappointment clear in his voice.
“Huntsman, just take the vial back.” you requested, not bothering to turn around as you heard the telltale “thwip” of Ben's webs snagging on an object. “We can take a look at it later.”
The tension in the room eased considerably, then. That is, until the castle walls shook from the combined, synchronous roar of an undead army. You clapped your hands over your vulpine ears, and Mercy covered your human ones. Everyone else tried to do the same.
“THAT MUST BE SIMON'S CUE!” you shouted.
“I'VE NEVER BEEN SO HAPPY TO HEAR A ZOMBIE HORDE APPROACHING!” Ben cheered.
“WHAT IS GOING ON!? WHAT IS THAT SOUND!?” B screamed aloud.
“LOUD. VERY LOUD.” James whined.
“WILL SOMEONE PLEASE COVER MY EARS?” Beast requested.
“YOUR JUDGEMENT HAS BEEN FORESTALLED LONG ENOUGH.” Ammit boomed, her tail angrily slapping the ground. “BRING ME TO THIS ‘KAIJU KING’ OF WHOM YOU SPEAK.”
