For a short moment, your room is filled with different kinds of greetings as the three stooges make themselves comfortable around you. They range from a simple “Hey,” from Asher as he slumps in the seat your father used earlier, a polite nod from Alyssa as she sits as properly as any highborn lady. Then there’s Marie, who helps herself to a part of your bed near your legs as she excitedly shouts your name a little bit too loud. Of course, you give a “Greetings,” of your own, so as to not be left out of the event, before asking Asher, “What happened to the other one?”
He scrunches his face, “Other one..? Oh! You mean Sally.”
You nod as that blessedly does not require you to speak, something you would like to minimize at the present moment. You are not sure your exhausted body could prevent itself from slurring your normally well-formed and put-together words, which would be an embarrassment that you currently can easily prevent.
He doesn’t look you in the eyes, “I let her go at the end of the mission. She did her part well enough, so I freed her and dropped her off with one of the clans. Doubtful we’ll ever hear from her again.”
“Truly? That is not an outcome I expected.”
“Yeah, I thought she’d keel over by the end of it, too.”
“That is,” You pause, “Not what I was implying.”
“Didn’t think the Inquisition would be fine with just letting assets like us,” Marie gestures between herself and Asher, “Go easily like that.”
“Hey, you got the option of going into hiding at the start of this, too, remember?” Asher replies, “Not like the offer just disappears.”
“But did she not have a debt that needed to be paid off?” You ask.
He flips his hand into the air as a dismissive gesture, “More trouble than she’s worth,” He says that with a note of finality, but you get the impression there is more to the story. “Before you ask, no, I can’t tell you more about my mission. Totally super classified.” Never mind, you know there is more to the story.
“Is that not information I could just find? The Inquisition keeps more written records than most other bureaucracies. Can I not simply just read the reports?”
“Nope. Classified.”
“Surely, the Lord Inquisition, who I am now an acquaintance of, would not bar my access.”
He nods, “Nah, he totally would.”
“No. I can definitely find what happened should I put my mind to it.”
“You can try,” He says with a hint of mockery. How infuriating. “Besides, who even wants to talk about me? I know myself, and I’m sure everyone else, would rather hear your bold exploits.”
