That all changes when you meet a girl by the name of Valentine Harper, one of the aforementioned superhumans on her first night out. After beating up her pet zombie and making her cry, the long arm of the law swoops in to snatch the two of you up. In short order, you're recruited as Harper's handler into the elite ranks of the Protectorate, an IGO dedicated to defending civilization against these so-called Alices and Beasts. Was any of this your choice? The gun to your head and sword at your throat tell you to say yes.
