Tonight is your first nightwatch. It's a rite of passage for all new castle guards, one junior and one veteran, together on the wall, keeping the castle safe from all that goes bump in the night. You were hoping to have the honor of serving with Captain Sweete tonight, the beloved commander of castle guards. A man gifted in every respect: good looks, a sharp mind, a strong arm, a quick wit, and for all that, with a warm, generous heart. All that keeps him from perfection is a noble lineage, yet as the bosom friend of Lord Edmund Ashe (now master of the keep, since his father's illness), he enjoys privileges far above the common man. He lives in the castle. He eats at the same table as his Lord, at his right hand. He is even godfather to the Lord's newborn son. He is, at any rate, among the commoners, the most eligible bachelor in the realm. Yet, as far as anyone knows, he has no woman. There are even rumors that he is chaste--which, if so, might qualify him for sainthood.
When you heard that he might be joining on you nightwatch, you were naturally elated---and doubly disappointed when instead of the legendary Captain Sweete, you were joined by the decided less heroic Clayton Crawforde. Crawforde is old and wrinkled. And fond of drink. Tonight, he stinks of the stuff, and not half-hour after the watch begins you find him curled up in the northeastern tower, a circle of moonlight illuminating his tonsured head, snoring like an ox. Waking him is futile, of course. Instead, you unclasp your cloak and drape it over him and return to your diligent patrol.
All is quiet and uneventful. But some hours before the dawn, when sleep begins to pull upon your eyes, you witness a most appalling sight. Atop the donjon, the highest point of the keep, is Captain Sweete, and beside him Lady Ashe, the Lord's beloved wife, wrapped in adulterous embrace.
>Forget you saw this and don't ever mention it to anyone
>Confront Captain Sweete the next morning
>Report this horrible betrayal to Lord Ashe
>Write-in
