"As you wish.", says Lootgar, shortly before piercing the kobold's chest with his blade. He dumps the corpse in the woods.
"Nothing much worth looting from this fellow."
You eat your food and you and Lootgar keep chatting while Elean prays her morning prayers to Braxtia.
"So, you've been an adventurers very long?", asks Lootgar.
"I've been at it ever since I got out of apprenticeship. My master kept sending me on increasingly dangerous missions. I was lastly tasked with gathering a rare flower that grows in the tundra. It is only harvestable one day once a year. It is used for a very powerful planar spell."
"Planar spell?"
"Yes, to open a rift and let an extraplanar entity into this world."
"Isn't that... uh... demonology?"
"Not necessarily. Master could summon an angel or some other good entity. Not necessarily a demon."
"I see. And your master was the type who would summon demons?"
"I don't think so. He was a bit of a lecherous old man who would only pick female apprentices, but for the most part he was an okay man. I don't even know why I'm talking about him in the past, he is probably alive and still expecting me to bring him his component."
"Well, you are out of luck. Ships only come here in this island once a year, when the currents don't toss them against the rocks. It will be several months before you can get out of this island, minimum."
"I think I can thrive in here in the meantime."
"Prayers done, let's move about.", says Elean.
Your group then starts moving.
After a few hours walk you begin seeing dozens of posts that were planted in the sand here. At their tops, the old red fabric of what used to be flags still wave against the wind.
"In the past an ancient organization called "Red Guard" took over the island briefly. They places flags all over the place. Then they were driven out by necromancers. The necromancers in turn were defeated by a group of paladins. The paladins founded an order but over time as the founders departed it became just a warriors club. There original Red Guard is gone, but there is a whole bunch of offshoots. They hide in caves mostly, to avoid the major cities and the dangerous wilderness in the center of the island."
"Fascinating."
"Look! Some bodies."
The bodies of three dead adventurers were thrown to rot near an estuary.
"Looted. Ominous.", you say, after checking their pockets.
"Well, this doesn't look like the place to rest."
