You’re under no illusions that the game of maintaining a balancing act between the factions is something the LT has been playing for a long while now, and his consternation of leaving that to the resident musclehead (but still cunning!) NCO of his squad was obvious. You do your best not to upset that, so far as you can in the malleable torrent of agendas and arguments ranging from the critical to the frivolous as the night drags on.
Right now, keeping these rebels fired up and willing to fight is the course that maximises the Company’s own chances of making it out of this venting airlock of a mission alive. The Libertans are an easy mark for that end, many of them like Kerim’O’Kas already laud you as one of the champions of the cause. If they bestow just one more voiddamn empty laurel or honorific to your achingly long list of titles such as ‘The People’s Hero’ or ‘Saviour of the Saved’ or anymore of that space trash you’re going to puke, but you’ll suck it up if it means revving up the larger Libertan faction for the fight.
You’re not the only one unimpressed with the sickly sweet praises lauded upon you for saving the common slave, not least because the many of the common escaped slave is starving to death or being mowed down by Savis guns probably right this very moment, but unlike the Handouts issue with the hypocrisy you also personally don’t give a vacant voiddamn about the ‘common folk’ too weak to hunt the hunter themselves.
Becoming fluent in the Imperial pidgin that is the most common spoken language among the scores of different League of Dis species was essential. You didn’t have the luxury have handing out translators to the many rebels that underwent your crash course in jungle warfare, and hunting Savis patrols with a language barrier at the squad level was a recipe for disaster. Thanks to that necessity following the track of the debates and votes on the War Council’s course of action is something you can actually keep track of. Wasp may as well be a native-born speaker by this point, but you find yourself turning to him only occasionally and that’s usually to get a better grip on who is who in this zoo rather than translating the odd word or phrase you’re unfamiliar with.
So when the leader of the Handouts starts their outburst in your direction that sees several major factions responding with their own fierce defence of you and, by extension, the Company, you see it coming a voidjump away. Hot poison.
