A ton of high schools in America used to have shooting clubs, teach gun safety. Wizards are kind of stuck behind muggles in some regards, so it kind of made sense that they would still do stuff like that. Then there is the fact that one of the founders of Ilvermorny was a muggle; he was even their first DADA teacher, made all the students wands, and was Headmaster with his wife as well. And how does a muggle compete with wizards? Muggle ingenuity, including guns. As long as they aren't incorporeal, a bullet to the head works just as well as a spell to the chest much of the time after all and Rowling even said a muggle with a shotgun beats your average wizard way back when.
