But on account of the hour - and of yourself - you will be remembered. A Guard might even be inclined to try to stop you, or at least question you. Even if you are able to win your way through, there will be a witness unless you were willing to take the time and risk of sneaking your way over the walls - or you were willing to turn your Wand of Head-Knocking on him. But with only five Ounce Nodules in good health with Charge, should you even consider that an option?

On the topic of options, you should also consider what to wear. From an appreciable distance, the domestic dress concealed by your hooded riding cloak might pass as a man's great cloak - but your 'worn piece', what with its contours and ostentatious flair is obviously, distressingly feminine. Come to think of it, it is also unique isn't it? On account of the size, at least. Shit, that ... that might be a problem. Not just now, but - no, focus! Obviously, if you are going to change, it would be easiest to do it here, rather than take the riding dress - or habit, or whatever exactly the damned thing is - with you and find some alleyway. You have done that before, certainly, but ... you have done lots of things that you would rather not have, haven't you? Still, if you weren't going to sneak or Head-Knock your way through the Walls, wearing the riding dress through a gate would ensure that you would be remembered and gossiped about - probably for the rest of that Guards life. Perhaps you don't change into the 'worn piece' at all? Try to explain it away as a safety precaution for being out so late at night unattended. Whatever you decide, you should decide quickly - as it stands, the time commitment for moving unseen through the Mount is going to be ruinous. Perhaps you should prioritize speed instead of stealth at this point?

For a second, you consider doing it right now, as this sort of work will be a lot more comfortable sitting in a chair at a table than it would be squatting in a Closet on a street, right above the sewers … but you ween yourself off of that notion as quick as it came. Promptly concluding your business in this house is more important that your comfort – so to close the book on this idea, you place the book atop the head, then you put the other two you took out of the 'sack in the sling you just prepared.

Your preparations complete and your attention undivided, you turn to face the room, holding your 'stick aloft. Case by case, and shelf by shelf you read every title that you can lay light on – and straight-away, you are pleasantly surprised at just how far the breadth of the collection strays away from botany. For a start, there are a lot of practical texts about cultivating and using plants, alongside more academic works focusing on studying them. But there is more than that! There are histories; of law and philosophers, of wars, of Outremer and Principalities, of saints and the Priests, even one on pipes. You are not sure how one could muster enough words to write an entire book about the history of pipes, yet someone must have – for there it sits on the shelf. You find yourself smiling at the thought of it, even once you pass it by. You have resolved that you need to see all of the books in the room before you can even start to consider pulling anything from the shelves; and you are not even going to look at the curios and nick-knacks that fill some of the spaces in the shelves until you have packed away your twelve.

It could ... but you would need to find some place suitable for a fairly significant fire. More than that, it would have to be somewhere it wouldn't be discovered once you left. That doesn't exactly give you a lot to work with. Yet ... what if you were to dump it in the sewers? The Cleaner Closet that you stashed your cart in had access, didn't it? The earliest that anyone would ever be down there would be next morning - surely the rats would have made mince out of the head by then. And in the worst case scenario, that it is still uncanny come the morning, and is found by a Leper, what are the odds that they report it straight-away? Or at all?

Relief washes over you - for a shadow of a second. Then you remember the condition that the Midden is in, and especially the Coroners. Guilt - and shame - subsumes you. You shake your head, as if it was something that could be physically dislodged, and when that does little and less to help, you pointedly turn your attention to the Logic Organ.

Documentation! Right, right. Now, after your ... eventual success with the Nine-Dozen, you feel that some poking, prodding and probing will likewise be worth it on the Logic Organ. Not to the extent that you did on the Nine-Dozen, to be sure, but still enough to qualify as 'hands on'.

If you were breaking in blind, running with no substantial knowledge of the inside, then you would want the surety that there were Family Patents on the premises - so that would point you towards the Forum. However, if you were going to walk in instead of break in, you could pump the clerks for all the information you can on Family Patents, so long as you managed to pass yourself off as someone with legitimate cause to be there and ask those kind of questions. Besides just learning where exactly they are in the clerk-house - assuming they <span class="mu-i">are</span> in the clerk-house - you might also learn a few things about them that might be of some aid when it comes time for you to try your hand at forging one, even if it turns out that Family Patents are not kept at or issued from the outlying clerk-houses. That is enough to resolve you - the thought that even if the papers are elsewhere, you might gain some useful intelligence regardless by ferreting it out of conversation with the clerks.

Now, all that remains is to find a suitable place to stow the hand-cart while you are conducting your business at the house.Easier said than done, of course, especially considering all of the nonsense that you went through just to keep your cart safe for a little bit ... just to have it dug through anyway. Pattern's Perdition, you - you can't dwell on that now. Right now, you need to focus. If there is a white lining to a black cloud, it is that because you are moving so slowly on account of both the weight of your purchases from the Fishmonger, and the risk that you spill some of them on your dresses, you have the opportunity to really get a good look around your surroundings. Uh ... there is an alley that might serve for a - Oh! Oh! Right there, down a side-street a few buildings down from that alley, is a Cleaner's Closet! That would be perfect, wouldn't it!

You are half ecstatic for thinking of this, and half upset for not thinking of it sooner. Lepers assigned to street cleaning and clearing have these little stations dotting the Mount with these shafts into the sewers, so they can dump the refuse and waste they gather up down into them.As it must be getting close to the eighteenth hour by now, all of the Lepers will be back in the Midden, and no-one decent would risk the condition of their Thread by poking around such a place. It is a perfect spot for temporary storage - and better yet, there are Cleaner's Closets all over the Mount! Oh, this is perfect! All you need to do now if figure out how you are going to present yourself at the clerk-house, and you know you are just going to sail through this smooth as silk.
