BTW
QM's gotten really good at making it clear our boys are using volkites (thanks QM!) I would like to hope maybe we even achieved the emperors dream that the Volkite Charger is now the standard basic weapon for Legion. Even the Emperor who invented the boltgun planned for it to be but a stop gap weapon. A most glorious feat for our Legion.
Problem: It's a Heavy Weapon. Which means if they move, they get a -1 to hit. It also unlike the Boltgun isn't Rapid Fire, so it doesn't get the additional firepower when an enemy is in close range. Nor is it an Assault Weapon like the Melta-Gun, which still technically hits harder (but with shorter range).
Guilliman and Ferrurs have detachment rules that both mitigate the penalty to firing heavy weapons when moving, and Ferrus even gets a reroll on a 1.
If we were to min-max the energy weapons doctrine for our legion further, how would we do so? Should we be like Guilliman/Ferrus and make our boys capable of shooting and firing heavy volkite chargers? Or perhaps invest technologically to make a Rapid Fire Volkite weapon (we did discover Hell-frost Crystals, so maybe we can make like the Hellguns/Hotshots do and have a big backpack with crystals circulating coolant so they can fire more without overheating. Think Nitro Boosts for cars).
Alternatively, another cool thing to do in the future is treat the Volkite itself as another stop gap, and work to invent beamer meltas that have double range. I would like to imagine:
>24" Assault 1 S8 AP-4 D6 (+2 against Vehicles at 12")
Would be a very good weapon!
