They've been around since at least Zeta, but Side Six's defense forces were using them back during the OYW going by 0080. They never seemed to have received much in the way of military development, generally being converted civilian units with guns strapped on them, but there's one briefly in the background of the Torrington base attack in Unicorn that looks like a proper fighting machine. Infantry equipped with them seem like a nasty thing to run into in urban combat or during a boarding action; the smaller ones might even be able to fit in some ship passageways.
