It becomes pretty obvious pretty quickly why the old method got banned - it was destructive in nature, routinely resulting in the entire fossil in question being destroyed in order to extract enough DNA for the cloning process.
Paradoxically, the later processes couldn't have been achieved without this earlier base as it allowed a larger repository of DNA to be gathered and recorded with which to fill in blanks in a given fossil sample which in turn led to faster and more stable clones.
