"And the others?" asked Wilhelm, for even in his home kingdom of Helmbarte had they heard stories of the great staves of power. He looked at the staff in the Lady's hand again. It was so dark that the rays of the morning sun seemed to slide off of it like oil.
"There is the Staff of Fire, which Hendrika wields," said the Lady Louve. "She must use it to control the dragon. The Staff of Water was lost when the House of the Falcon was destroyed, though rumor holds it escaped the sacking."
"And the last of the staves?" Wilhelm asked, and looked again at the staff in her hand.
"The last is the Staff of Darkness, which can wither the hale." The Lady Louve looked at Wilhelm. "Yes, boy. This is the staff of death, the last of the four great staves of power. It is the only reason why our lands have not been fully conquered by the army of the Dragon Lord."
