The butler doesn't waver and simply steps back again. Hawthorne nods and takes a step indoors only for his leg to slide forward sharply. You lean in and grab his shoulder, stabilizing him as he manages to stand up straight again. The butler raises an eyebrow and dryly remarks:
"Freshly Waxed, sir." He gestures to the rack again. "Slip-proof."
Hawthorne stares at him for a moment before you see the smallest crack of a grin before he buries it.
"Got fourteens?"
"Bottom right." The butler replies, a smirk of his own bubbling up as he turns on his heel. "Once you have changed and made your way to the parlor room I can provide you with refreshments for your colleagues. You are the first to arrive."
"Who else is on this with us?" You ask Hawthorne as you both tug off your shoes.
"Bunko and Chen, Banks and Costas. I'll give a debrief, assign posts, and then we get to wait around."
"Oh shit, Banks is on this? I didn't know he was doing night shift."
"He's covering for Moore."
"Haven't met him yet, I know Bunko though, he sign up for this?"
"Mhm. Overtime pay is a good motivator. C'mon." He jerks his head as he experimentally steps deeper into the foyer. "Now since you know someone on both of these teams, you go ahead and decide who goes where. Better we have that sorted out before any of em can bitch at us about it."
"You want me to pick?"
"Your show." He says flatly. "Not changing anytime soon."
>"Bunko and Chen should man the car by the road, no offense to him but Bunko's a little lazy and if he can take a shortcut patrolling he will."
>"Banks and Costas should take the road, Banks doesn't usually work these shifts so we don't want him burning out on us too early."
>"What about shift rotations? Four hours and then they swap posts?"
>"What about shift rotations? We can do a swap every two hours so nobody gets too complacent in one area?"
