Mel’s second pass proved fruitful, tucked between the jars of rotting herbs were two packets of chamomile herbs, dried for long storage. A few bones in the boxes seemed to have escaped the beasts that were gnawing on them. A leather belt, hung with stone carving tools was tucked behind a stack of stone slabs. Satisfied with her finds Mel gathered up some of the pouches, paper bags and glass jars for later use, and turned to leave.
Her foot slammed abruptly into the footer of a shelf and she cursed and staggered away, bumping into another shelf. It wobbled ominously.
“Oh no.”
The shelf tipped, crates of metal junk crashing to the floor, slammed into the next shelf over. Mel scrambled out of the way, wincing as rickety shelves collapsed and fell, a wave of dust rising up as the cacophony intensified. She waited awkwardly by the entrance as the dust settled, the sound of a crooked shelf slowly dropping all of its glassware to the floor, one clink at a time, fortunately landing on a heap of burlap sacks.
Sitting in the midst of the broken shelves was a small stone coffer, had it been sitting high up on a shelf out of sight? Or hidden in some secret compartment shattered to bits? Either way, it was hers now. She stepped gingerly through the wrecked room and popped open the coffer. A pair of potions were nestled within, resting in velvet compartments.
The first was a concerningly thick pale white sludge. A weathered label attached to it read: Basilisk egg slurry, should be good for some extra mana, mind the taste. Mel set it down gingerly as her stomach turned at the thought of drinking it. Babs had mentioned using the eggs of monsters for magic but this was a little more direct than Mel cared for. She picked up the second potion, a glittering red liquid. A simple tag was attached with a dragon looking emblem drawn on it, although what that might mean was a mystery.
She gathered up her treasures in a crate, recounting them briefly. An inking kit, a carving set, some jars, vials, pouches, and small paper bags, a pair of chamomile pouches, a pinky, ring, and middle finger bone, and the two potions. Not a bad haul.
