>>5327134“It’s you?” You can’t stop the surprise that coats your voice, because Conduit had been the one responsible for all of those odd, painful dreams.”You’re the one that’s been trying to contact us this whole time?!”
“Yeah… it was me.” He nods, the hand in your mind almost apologetic for whatever reason. “You can sit, by the way. I don’t think the connection’s going to sever anytime soon.”
You don’t need any further prompting to plop yourself down on the sand in front of him, and, while you thought you were wearing a tank and shorts, now you’re garbed in a loose, flowing robe that’s almost luminescent beneath the glow of the stars.
Pulling your focus from the sudden shift in clothes, you regard the haggard-looking empath in front of you as worry worms its way into your gut.
Obviously, there’s a reason Conduit’s been trying to contact you, and, with just how realistic the dreams he’s sent you so far have been, the implications are far from good.
Thinking about what exactly you want to say to him, the sensation of dozens of tiny needles pressed into your skull comes to mind. “They’ve been hurting you, haven’t they?”
You don’t even have to say who it is. You felt and saw exactly what he saw when he contacted you the first couple of times.
“What was your first guess?” Conduit’s tone is sardonic, but, at the same time, the hand in your mind is almost apologetic for whatever reason. “It’s hard to control what you transmit when you’re being treated like a damn science experiment.”
His words confirm what you already guessed, yet you can’t stop the flash of concern that wells up in you for the other mutant. However, there’s something about his mental presence that tells you that there’s more to this than meets the eye.
