"You ever have that feeling that you're going through the motions? Doing things for the sake of it?" Lex mutters. "Guess that's what it felt like until now. Boring corpo jobs. Syndies. All of it was a slog. You're exciting, different. Sure, you're a freak but so what?" He shrugs.
You take a moment to digest what he said before you give him a solid response. "Don't act like I'm some perfect dream pixie girl for you. I'm not perfect, you know?" As much as some primal part of you WANTS to be seen as perfect. Or at least normal.
To have no flaws. To always win, to always be at the top, to always get what you want.
To always protect those around you.
"I really do respect the fact you care so much. But you also matter. I care about you too, man." You offer a faint smile.
"I know, I know, it's just-"
"Ah, ah." You interrupt him. "And you need to take care of yourself. I'm fine. I survived worse and you worrying yourself sick is going to hurt both of us. Okay?"
Lex takes a deep breath in before letting out a small, exhausted sigh. "Okay. Okay, I'll be a bit less overprotective. Can you blame me, though? You're like, uh, one of those cute. Furred things." His mind is completely blanked out from exhaustion. Fuck, when's the last time he's slept?
"Deer. I have antlers. That's probably what you're thinking about?"
"Yeah, beer." Lex flashes a smile. "Not sure what that has to do with antlers. Are you drunk?" Oh, the fucker's trying to be coy, huh?
"FUCK YOU." You jab him in the side with your antlers.
"OW FUCK. FUCK YOU TOO!" He punches you on the shoulder.
The two of you stare each other down with faux malice before the two of you just break out into a laughing fit, barely audible over the raging storm around you. It's a nice moment of reprieve after everything you've been through today.
"Alsoyoulookedreallyhotwhenyouwerecoveredinblood."
"WHAT."
Before you have have time to process THAT, you find yourself at the small camp sight set up at the stern of the ship. There's a huge tent firmly tied to the ground, probably big enough to hold a dozen or so people. Considering the music you're hearing, Ashley is probably in there. A bright orange glow is visible underneath the flaps of the tent, probably where the bonfire is.
Thirty or so feet away from that is a man at the very back of the ship you're on, staring into the dark sea with his legs dangling precariously over the edge. You narrow your eyes. He only has one arm so you assume it's Benedict.
Trailing behind the stern of the ship is the enemy ship. It's close enough that you'd have no problem jumping over to it. You can't make out more than that but the faint reek of blood and rot tells you that the bodies are probably still there.
"So, why are we here?" Lex looks down at you.
"I wanted to talk to Benedict. Maybe explore the ship later. Is that fine?"
Lex shrugs. "Hey. You told me not to worry, do whatever. Just, uh, be careful with Bene. He hasn't moved from that spot in hours."
