Kinzou seems accepting of this idea, and excitedly departs that morning to seek work. After some trodding through mud and snow he arrives at a small set of buildings on the eastern set of town, generally referred to as the 'intake'. The intake doubles as a storehouse and trading post. Any caravans stopping at Fogtop stop at the intake to trade goods, book lodgings, and so on and so forth, and the occasional caravans heading out of Fogtop to the county seat or elsewhere in the province are organized by the intake as well. It could be said to be the economic seat of the village, if someone was to use so grand a term.
A large man in roughly woven clothes intercepts Kinzou as he enters the area. "Hey, kid, you ain't supposed to play around here! Go somewhere else!" Kinzou stops and addresses him. 「Thanks mister, but I'm here to look for a job. Y'know who I should talk to about that?」
The man looks Kinzou up and down and scratches his head. "How ol' are you? You looking for an apprenticeship? Wanna be a wagonhand?" Kinzou shakes his head. 「Uh, I don't think so. I can read and write pretty good already. Thought there'd be work for that.」 "Huh." He thinks for a minute. "The shift manager is in the building over there. Knock three times. If he doesn't respond, then come back another day." The man turns back to his work loading a cart, only shooting an occasional glance at Kinzou to make sure he isn't up to anything odd.
Kinzou heads up to a long wooding building and knocks on the door. It takes some time, but eventually a man's voice can be heard from inside. "Come in." Kinzou opens the door, revealing what is best described as an extremely cluttered office. Bookshelves and baskets line the walls, filled with documents, but they still find their way out, overflowing across the room. Writing utensils lay astray, and all sorts of bits and bobs are scattered about. A man with messy black hair sits in the midst of it all, now staring at Kinzou.
Several seconds of confused staring later, the man speaks. "Do you work for us?" Kinzou shakes his head. 「Nah. I want to though.」 After a short pause, Kinzou adds more. 「I can read. And write.」 "Uhh... really?" The man glances around for a moment before picking up a quill. "Can you do math?" 「A little.」 He unconsciously nods. "Good, good. Here, take this." He hands several sheets of paper over to Kinzou. "Add up the totals for each item onto the final sheet. If there's a word you don't recognize, talk to Brynn - the old man with the blonde hair in the next room over. You're hired. We'll talk details over lunch."
