There were quickly several Dwarfs now standing next to the Gatekeeper. Each of them were gawking or staring at Lucian as he kept his chest out and his posture firm. He wanted to curl into a ball, the cold now stabbing him as he tried to look tough and strong, so he endured it. He would endure it if it meant they would have entry into this keep.
“Bretonnian!” A Dwarf had pushed away the gatekeeper and was now shouting down in a voice that was louder and more brutal than the last, “Why do you bear the mark of the Slayers!? How!?”
“I bear it because I seek vengeance!” Lucian told the Dwarfs with a firm pronouncement, “My home was burned and destroyed by the dead, and I vowed vengeance against the Vampire who did this. Grimnir knows this, I am sure, and gives me his strength!”
Taking his hands, the Black Knight removed the helm and exposed himself to their sight. He could feel the surprise of all the Dwarfs as they gazed upon him, each of them seeing the green eyes that showed the Knight Fey Touched.
“Do you permit us entrance?” Lucian asked as he hanged his helm to the side while grabbing the reins of Nightshade, “May you assist me in the vengeance I seek!?”
There was a sudden chatter amongst the Dwarfs, this one far more fervent and with shouting so loud that Lucian could hear it clearly. He could understand a few words, like man, stupid, and Slayer in the tongue of the Dwarfs.
It was only when another of those, this one whose beard was as silver as the other’s armor, spoke out, “You, the Dawi in the Wagon, reveal thyself! Was it you who made this Umgi’s Rune!?”
Lucian glanced over to see his fellow look up. Hesitant for a moment, the Dwarf quickly took the hat and scarf off to reveal his full face to the Dwarfs present. He looked at the men, his face soft as he yelled, “I am Runesmith Adok Fireskin…” He hesitated with a baited breath, “Son of Runelord Lornir of Karak A Karak!”
Lucian noticed that whatever Adok just said had sent the Dwarfs in a frenzy of words. Their voices reminding Lucian of those damning whispers of court, except the Dwarfs here did not hide it. The word Oathbreaker was what caught Lucian’s ears the most.
