You made a disgusted sound.
“So you sold out the whole world just so you could find a nice, quiet lab? You could have literally done that anywhere!” you argued, throwing your hands up in protest.
Dr. McCoy shook his head slowly.
“Not without Charles Xavier finding out, I'm afraid.”
“Seriously. What's your deal with that guy?” Ben asked. “If I wanted to get away from Charles Xavier, I would just make sure that my lab wasn't wheelchair accessible.”
B laughed, but he didn't seem to notice the way that Ammit folded her arms over her chest in displeasure.
“On the contrary. I am quite fond of Charles.” Beast answered. “But there is an essential matter on which we strongly disagree. And that is the topic of whether a cure for mutants should be allowed to exist at all.”
You and B exchanged confused looks.
“But Charles Xavier isn't the only mutant on the team.” you put in. “Even if he has a lot of pull, there should still be mutants out there who want to be cured, right?”
Beast nodded.
“Undoubtedly. However, distributing a cure without the X-Men knowing will prove difficult.”
“Is it because Xavier thinks that it'll be used as a weapon against the mutants?” Ben reasoned.
“Indeed. That fear has motivated Charles to resort to extreme measures in order to maintain the status quo.” Beast said. “His most loyal students are not shy about killing those that oppose his agenda. Mental and digital manipulation are well within his capabilities as well. If he were to ever discover the true purpose of my research…”
“Then you'd be next on the chopping block.” you concluded.
“Precisely.” Beast said, his eyes drifting between you, Ben, B, and then finally, Ammit.
“What about the mutants that don't want to be cured?” you asked, dragging his attention back to you. “What happens to them once this hits the public?”
“That will be for them to decide. Or, perhaps, the world.”
“A little reckless, don't you think, doc?” Ben said.
He gave Ben a long, searching look.
“Do you not think that the mutants who develop grotesque physical mutations would search for a way to revert those physical changes? That a mutant who has experienced prejudice at the hands of Homo-Sapiens would wish for nothing more than to return to normal society?”
“Of course I know that.” Ben snapped back. “People have had their lives ruined, just because they're a little different than the rest of us.”
Beast's ears perked up. B just glanced at Ben out of the corner of his eye.
“Ah…I see now that you are an ally. It is fortunate that you were the one to come here.” he decided, his once cold eyes now gleaming with hope.
“Hold on. How do we even know you're telling the truth right now?” you demanded, pointing an accusing finger at him. “For all we know, that ‘cure’ could just be saline solution.”
“True. He might’ve just cooked this story up to make us feel sorry for him.” B thought aloud.
