Before them stood a beast that was taller than a man, with shaggy fur and long legs stained green from the swamp. A pair of huge forked antlers extended from its skull into the morning sky.
Wilhelm had never seen such a beast. "What is it?" he whispered.
"A bull swampoose," Ludolph replied in a voice low enough to escape the creature's ears. "If it catches our scent, it will gore us all!"
"Our arrows will do nothing," Rudolph whispered as they watched it browse. "The beast's hide is too thick!"
"There is nothing more delicious in all the land!" bemoaned Adolph.
