“If we fail, then that’s it. Every day we run that risk in order to restore our race.” You close your eyes, deep in thought. “There’s a reason why we’re doing things differently now. The old ways failed us. The class system and the fact that we rested on our laurels. It all led to this.”
Turles looks at you, listening intently, it’s like he’s looking for something to convince him.
“We have to adapt and change, we have to be willing to see things differently and stop using brute force to get our way. A year ago I would’ve considered a battle against Frieza impossible unless I was somehow turned immortal. But now I see it differently. Our powers rise, our allies do so as well. With time, we can defeat him.”
A short silence follows where you think of your next words. “And if we failed, then we failed while fighting for our freedom, and those that remain will know that.”
Turles looks down.
“It’s better than dying while being pawns. It means that we lived for a purpose instead of merely existing as attack dogs for other masters or our own whims. We would be slaves to our own instincts no longer, that ego that pushes us to lie and boast and stand above others.”
You stand up. “And if I were to fall.” You say as you point at yourself. “I expect all survivors to carry on our new will. Our new Saiyan way. We will be proud warriors, as the other option is to be like animals, surviving day to day, a fate worse than death.”
“A new Saiyan way, huh?”
“Yes. Once I thought this was just about revenge. But to me it’s now about something more, it’s about giving our people a new future, a strong future, with goals to achieve, a united purpose.”
Turles smiles wanly. “You know what? You’re right. I don’t want to live like a dog. I don’t want to be some whatever pirate that steals breadcrumbs. If I die, I’m going to die like a real warrior, one whose story could be told and the listeners would want to be me, y’know?”
You nod and smile as well. “Exactly. That is what I want too. I will no longer be the foolish prince who served the very creature that slaughtered his race just to have a cozy life. I want to die an upstart, a rebel for a fair cause.”
Turles chuckles. “I guess… I guess it might be worth it. I’m an old man anyway, for a Saiyan. I’ve seen and lived enough.”
You wave the thought off. “You have much more to see and live through. I’ll make sure of that. We’ll do it together.”
He gets up and offers you his arm. You clasp it and he clasps yours. “Alright, fine. I’m in, prince Vegeta. Let’s fight and die together.”
“Aye.” You loosen your grip and he loosens his. “I’ll go and dine now. Want to come?”
“I am quite hungry.” Turles says. “Let’s go get some grub.”
