Our trip was long, being right between the length of crossing one continent after the other. We passed by trees innumerable, the occasional street lights on less rural-paths lightning the way like beacons, and bamboo thickets heralding the exit from the stone forests of western Shengesia.
I could see we were fast approaching Siegesia now. The snowy continent of heroes was before us now, and the sun was beginning to set.
Yet, I saw the strangest thing as we came to the cusp of the ending of one of the great bridges.
It happened so fast that a human like Hale would not notice. His mortal perception was not enough. But I saw it, I saw every second of it, and to me, it was no faster than if he were driving his car at the speed of a snail, barely giving the engine gas and pressing the pedal down.
A man, to the right, on my side, standing on the road.
He was armored head to toe in jet black plates. He carried a sword of pure gold with a large rimmed rain guard, and obscured his face under an impenetrable wedged armet. But I could sense his gaze following me through it easily.
And the weirdest thing happened.
He nodded to me.
I could sense there was something not quite right about this figure. Questioning how he'd seen me, how he'd picked me right out, and why he'd bothered to give me this gesture in the first place.
It was... strange... strange indeed, but as Hale's car sped by, he was gone just as soon as I'd seen him.
[MAJORDOMO] "What in the world was up with that? That guy was just standing there... meeting your own gaze."
'I don't know, Majordomo. Something about that just now didn't seem safe...'
[MAJORDOMO] "Unsafe you say? What do you mean?"
'...I'm unsure. But whatever that was, it felt like it could have been trouble, but chose not to be...'
[MAJORDOMO] "Mmmmm I don't like the sound of that. We'd better watch out for whoever that guy was in the future then, I guess."
What a queer thing to happen.
