And that was it. She detached herself from Abe, leaving him dazed and confused. Mantis turned to Joy, and was delighted to find the girl with her arms already spread wide open, anticipating the fortune teller’s embrace.
A moment later, Mantis’ warm smile slipped, and she frowned at Joy, her head tilting to the right slightly.
<span class="mu-g">“This one cannot see you. Why is-?”</span>
Mantis’ words cut off with a sharp gasp, and she quickly wrapped her arms around Joy’s slender figure.
<span class="mu-g">“Oh…you poor thing. Who hurt you? How did you get there? How did you get out? What did you do in between?”</span> Mantis said, gently stroking Joy’s hair.
The blonde clone in question had a serene look on her face, here arms tightening around Mantis’ shoulders.
<span class="mu-s">“You smell really nice…”</span> Joy whispered, her eyes still closed. <span class="mu-s">“Like flowers.”</span>
<span class="mu-g"><span class="mu-s"><span class="mu-i">“Take the deal. It’s the only way.”</span></span></span> Mantis whispered back.
Once again, you could sense that Mantis’ words had <span class="mu-s">weight</span>. Even after she released Joy, her eyes and antennae were still glowing.
<span class="mu-g"><span class="mu-s"><span class="mu-i">“Remember…”</span></span></span>
And then, the moment was over. Everyone stared at her, feeling a little unnerved by what you’d just experienced. Mantis smiled, grabbed another torta from the truck’s counter and bit into it. Here eyes grew wide.
<span class="mu-g">“Hey, this is really good! What’s in it?”</span>
Chef Ameyama gave Mantis an odd look. Abe and Joy were still shaking off the effects of whatever Mantis had done to them. And you were still fixating on what Mantis whispered into your ear.
<span class="mu-r">“Well, that was…”</span> you began.
<span class="mu-b">“Not what I expected.”</span> Abe finished.
She’d said his name earlier. She said “Peter”. How would she even know about him? Can she really see the future?
