>>5742346>>5742348>>5742383This is probably the weirdest ever thought in relation to lava, but in Quake 3 on Q3DM15, one of the gothic cathedral jump pad lava levels, you can drop down into a passageway and find John Carmack legendary programmer of id Software's decapitated head. This was clearly a penance in anticipation of his future participation in facebook / Oculus Rift. I just checked this and also his eyes actually glow there is a creepy shader, that flickers in and out the shader is tiny it is just his eyeballs?? Q3DM15 is not even one of the good quake 3 levels. I hate lava.
My favourite quake 3 level is actually not one of the competitive or famous ones, it is part of this custom mappack
https://lvlworld.com/shot/id:1833It is the Egyptian one, with a strange title A Man Called Sun. The author of this DM map was clearly some sort of visionary deathmatch god. Ignore the review this map is SO GOOD, the connectivity, so many twisting loops and vertical dropdown levels, the flow, no railgun, the lightning gun is enough. The texture work and geometry is really beautiful, the teleporters have custom shaders. Even the bots play it well, Hunter (she is the Amazon feather alien hunter girl) 1v1 on Nightmare difficulty oohhhh...
Probably the other good maps include cpm1a, aerowalk, cpm3a, these are all quite well known maps, I am not too good at them especially the aerowalk teleporters. Something I like about these old deathmatch maps is the heritage, for example there is a map called phrantic (I don't like it, there is lava...) but it has incarnations from quake 2, 3, 4, and doom 3 etc. You also had this with Unreal Tournament and the Deck 16 levels.
In terms of a good match between visuals and 1v1 deathmatch gameplay, something like phantq3dm4, this one
https://lvlworld.com/shot/id:2190is very strong, but there is one chokepoint corridor which is exploitable
or Solarae,
https://lvlworld.com/media/id:2248or something like this, AEDM7
https://lvlworld.com/media/id:2225This level is almost Quake 4 layout and graphical quality hehe (screenshots don't convey it, the shiny shaders shiny!) Nowadays videogames have changed, but I still treasure these old mods and maps, when people poured so much effort into creating these worlds and just gave them away for free
