Somewhere along the way, Sarah excused herself and simply…disappeared. You assumed that it was just another “magic thing” and banished it from your mind. You weren’t too worried about abrupt goodbyes and pleasantries, though. You’d promised her a favor, and you made sure to remember to expect her to cash in on that someday. Or maybe she wouldn’t. Either way, you’d try your best not to be surprised by her action or inaction going forward.
“Everyone wants a better world. Everyone just has a different opinion on what a better world should look like.”
Iara nodded.
“World can’t be perfect for everybody. All you can do is aim for the majority and try to manage the rest.”
“Or you find someone who’s goals line up with yours closely enough for you to support them. Someone with more power, ambition and resources at their disposal.”
Glass was the one carrying W now, and it sounded like she was starting to wake up.
Anastasia seemed to agree with that sentiment.
“A strong leader is far more important than fanciful ideals and pleasant promises. Even kind, resolute men and women can break under pressure or fall prey to corruption.”
“Speaking of strong leaders, I think I might know a way for you guys to improve your reputation in the city.”
Everyone turned to stare at you, waiting expectantly.
“There’s a woman called Silver Sable who’s looking for people to help her hunt down criminals. I think you guys would be a perfect fit for her little outfit.”
The Morlocks exchanged thoughtful looks with you and each other. Then they looked at W. You weren’t sure if you wanted to make the same offer to her, if you were being terribly honest. Despite her appearances, she was still a bit too young and immature. She needed a half-decent upbringing, and you didn’t want to pressure her into hunting down bad guys, even if she was potentially very good at it.
There was also the possibility of her providing surveillance via spider manipulation, but that also involves the risk of her seeing things that might negatively impact her development. It was definitely something to consider for the future.
Iara was the first to speak up.
“And she’s paying?”
“Considering how she runs her own company, I’m under the impression that she’s more than capable of paying you guys.”
There was an excited twinkle in Iara’s eyes now, and Glass seemed to like the idea of doing something that he considered to be helpful and productive.
“We’re not going to be expected to kill people, are we?”
You shook your head.
“I’m assuming that you’ll be allowed to operate in whichever way pleases your conscience, but I’ll talk it over with her next time I see her.”
“And…anyone can apply?”
