>>5608845There was something there. Something in the jungle. And I’m not talking about the Viet Cong. See, we ground troops never crossed the northern border. Not once. That was up to the Air Force, bombing the shit out of everything. Doesn’t that seem weird to you? We’re there to help out the South, okay, but there was no way we were winning that war unless we ground those commie bastards into dust. But we didn’t do it. Weren’t allowed to. But they kept bombing it from the air. Constant bombing and bombing and bombing. Burning the jungle to the ground. But not one foot over the little line dividing North from South.
It makes you wonder. See, we heard all sorts of rumours about the guys who went north. Guys who got close to that border. They couldn’t sleep. Whispers coming from the trees. They suffered more casualties than usual. More guys shooting themselves out of despair. A lot of spooky shit.
Now, I always thought that was just them being wimps, yeah? Or maybe there was just more of those damn Viet Cong up there than anywhere else. Some simple explanation to it.
Until I went there myself.
My squad, we got sent to a forward base in the area. Sizeable, but not massive. Spent a couple weeks there, going to villages, raiding VC bases. One day we went out on patrol. When we came back, the base was empty. Nobody left. Just a lot of blood everywhere. Of course we got told it was a VC attack and we were lucky we weren’t there. But that base… something wrong happened there. You could feel it.
I got told to forget about it, and I sort of did, until I ended up here. Made me rethink everything I saw. And some of the things I heard. Bullshit stories that can't possible be true, but leave you that one wriggling bit of doubt. But anyway.”
He turns his head to look at you and raises his beer. It's a little confusing to look into the eyes of a giant chicken. “To unknown mysteries!”
You raise your in response and take a long gulp. That was certainly some story.
