You were initially banking on your relationship with Yumi and her weakness to chuuni delusions to keep her in line. But while she'd been threatening you and your wives less and less every time you'd spoken to her, it was nice to have Herta around just in case the specter got any ideas.
The ghost's eyes begin to glow, and she makes tons of embarrassing and probably unnecessary poses. She doesn't go into the cavern itself, however.
After half an hour of waiting Yumi speaks again. "Alas, the tendrils of the unseen fox spirit elude my grasp!"
"Oh well." Herta said with a shrug of her shoulders. "Guess there's nothing there! Let's go back home."
"John Doe," Yumi said. "I beseech thee! Let us venture into the shadowy abyss of the cave, for I sensed something afoot. But fear not, we shall merely delve just a heartbeat beyond the threshold, to unveil the mystery once and for all!"
Well, if you're near the entrance of the cavern, it should be fine to look in a little. What's the worst that could happen?
...
A lot of bad things, actually.
"Master, we need to leave! <span class="mu-i">NOW</span>!!!" Herta is serious after sensing corruption magic.
"AAAGH!!!" Yumi shouts while clutching her head after an unseen spirit attacks her.
"<span class="mu-i">What are those things</span>?!?!" Mel takes some steps back when noticing the Poltergeist and undead goblins.
"<span class="mu-s">Oghlurk finally find puny goblin-killers. Oghlurk expand powers...</span>" Only your ears hear a familiar voice. It mockingly whisper his plans within the cavern's walls.
You'd all been jumpscared by a Poultergeist—they were beings composed of all the negative feelings and memories of the dead. You, your wives, and Yumi proceeded to enact a Scooby Doo chase scene with the eldritch horror as a special guest. Your rifle didn't have any effect against it, though the Shellstrike Gauntlets might've had magical properties you didn't want to risk a the cave coming down on you all from the explosion. Mel's invisibility was critical in helping escape. And you would've considered her to be a benefit, except...
"Why did you use illusions while we were there?!" Yumi exclaimed, back in her crystal again. Apparently illusion magic, unlike invisibility magic, was like shining a spotlight on those it's used on mana-wise for a ghost's eyes.
"I panicked, alright!" Mel said, clinging to your back. You'd ended up needing to save her a few times and suffered more than one close call.
Two of the standard clankers had to be sacrificed in order to ensure everyone's safety. As you were all leaving there was a cave-in anyway, making the entrance inaccessible. It's almost like the place was giving you the middle finger for daring to step foot there again.
You felt like any future expeditions in this cave would be more difficult.
