The thing I invented is the existence of temples and shrines and priests and symbols other than just trees. Such things are never mentioned in the series. We know that the true priests of the old gods are basically gone from the lands south of the Wall, except for at High Heart and the Isle of Faces, but without *someone* still around to defend the northern gods and teach their stories and laws to northern children, the country would have converted to the Faith of the Seven centuries ago. Hell, no one in the North even raises objections to Ned Stark having a Sept for Catelyn built in Winterfell.
