Your feet are moving before you realize it. Escape is your primary goal and nothing else matters. Across some fields and by the river, there's a certain narrow pedestrian bridge that no patrol car can cross over. You noticed it in your many bored ramblings through the area. It's overgrown with grass and rusting, evidence of long disuse. Beyond the bridge, there will be a forested area that will lead you directly to the Kasuga Shrine. A short cut for a person on foot, but those in vehicles must take a longer circuitous route.
The moon's light is helpful, otherwise there would be no way of running full tilt across the fields without tripping over something. At the same time, it works against you. The pale white illumination reveals where you're fleeing to.
"HALT IN THE NAME OF DA LAW!" A drunken scream shatters the stillness of the night.
Good god, that cop has a good set of lungs. You hear a car engine sputter to life and sirens blaring behind you.
The chase is on...
Quite literally.
A squeal of tires on the pavement followed by an unholy screech of metal greets your ear. You dare to take a quick look back and see that the patrol car isn't taking the road as you expected. No, instead it drove down to the little narrow gap between the metal guardrails where there's a little slope meant for tiny tractors to gain access to the farming fields. Now it speeds bumpily down the uneven dirt road.
You were confident that even a drunk would realize driving on narrow dirt pathways between rice paddies would be a fool's errand. You were dead wrong. In fact, you might actually be dead if this idiot rams his patrol car at you.
