>>5327417“You and Blink were the only ones I could think to contact.” Conduit continues, pulling his legs closer to his chest. “My mom… I don’t even remember her name anymore, not that she wanted anything to do with me, and my brother might as well be dead.” As he says that last part, the fractals in his eyes spin faster.
“My brother said the doctor would never touch me, but, as soon as he dropped, it was game over for me.” Conduit mentally hisses, contempt for the doctor clear within your mind.
You don’t need to be a genius to know that Atticus Charles would’ve never kept his promise to Eddie– it would’ve been naive of you to think otherwise. Eddie’s supposed death just happened to be the perfect opportunity for the doctor to get his hands on Conduit.
While you want to object that Eddie is definitely alive (and you do plan on telling Conduit sooner rather than later), in the present moment, there’s something else Conduit had said that niggles at your mind.
“Is… FutureLabs making you lose your memory?” For a good, long moment, Conduit doesn’t answer, the shame and self-loathing palpable within your mind.
“This place is my last-ditch attempt at preserving what’s left of it– not this part, but the rest of it is.” His eyes are drawn to the stars above. “They got me hopped up on enough Aurum Impulsum that I can’t even think straight half the time, and, while I can do a lot more than I ever could before, I don’t know how much longer I can hold out. But I know they need me for something, otherwise they would’ve just let me die already…”
Again, sympathy wells up in you for the empath, to which Conduit glares at you, but there’s no anger or malice in his eyes– none whatsoever. “You don’t have to feel bad for me, you know. It’s not like you can turn it all back– funny thing is I can do far more than I ever could’ve…”
“Like what?” You tilt your head at the other mutant.
