You shook your head and ran a hand down your face. “I don’t know. The situation’s gotten a lot more complicated.” you admitted. “I might have to head back out once I make sure that guys are safe.”
Vic sighed and leaned back against the wall. She looked like she’d halfway expected you to say that. “I was afraid you’d say that. I’m honestly hoping that the Avengers might get involved if this goes on any longer.”
You scoffed at that. Since when have the Avengers been involved in petty disputes between street gangs? If anything, you were expecting to run into the Defenders or possibly the Heroes for Hire. Then again, Reed Richards is an integral member of the hero community, so there might very well be some bigshot cape that comes crashing in to take care of things by themselves.
“I don’t know what you’re doing out there,” Vic continued, giving you a pointed gaze. “But there are some very dangerous people roaming the streets these days. Whatever you’re hoping to get from all this…it isn’t worth your life.”
“Vic…” you began. But before you could say anything else, your sister was already descending the stairs once more. “Where are you going?”
“Grabbing a Twix.” she said, gesturing for you to follow.
As promised, you helped her to lift the vending machine back up, and much to everyone’s good cheer, it still seemed to work just fine. You bought several bags of chips, candy and trail mix, while Vic managed to find a couple of water bottles for the family.
“If you’re going back out, I’m gonna need you to bring a few things back for us.” Vic said, struggling to hold all the water bottles that she’d procured. “Food, water, phone chargers, blankets. Stuff like that. I don’t know how long we’ll be here until, but I want to be prepared, just in case.”
You nodded.
“But…” she continued, pulling ahead of you a bit. “You’re also gonna have to explain to Mom and Dad why you won’t be here with the family.”
You winced at that. She was right. You were gonna need a damn good lie if you wanted to get out of this one.
