>>6058564>>6058593>>6058678>>6058528The comm silence is unnerving and even Cleo shifts uncomfortably next to you. She might have gone a little far with that last jab.
“I’m sure your brother does his best, Cleo.” Kiro finally says in a small voice.
“Yeah, well… I- uh…” The Ulveng flicks an annoyed ear in a rare moment of flustered speechlessness. “Are we chasing these cheaters or what, Dallas?” She changes the subject.
As much as you’d prefer to meddle with the simulation’s parameters with your command implant, you’re worried what else might be lurking in the ancient files that Commander Cooper has gotten his hands on. No, you’ll just have to follow your foes off the rails so to speak and try not to give them breathing room as they attempt to turn the competition back to their favour.
“Yes, I think we’ll just have to beat them at their own game!” You announce decisively. “Clifton, La’afette, re-centre your nav software on those fleeing Foxbats and get us within weapon’s range. Skyeskal, keep the scanner active so we don’t lose our fix on them. Keep your eyes peeled for any other hazards too.” You issue your orders, formally.
“On it, boss! Banking now.”
“Affirmative Lieutenant Commander Annon. On your wing, Lieutenant Clifton.”
“Yessir, Ell-Cee!”
Your crew’s quick acknowledgments sound over the comm and your view of the upcoming minefields shift as your Foxbat banks and turns. You watch your scanner as the coloured chevrons representing your targets slew around and slowly move towards the centre sector. You can make the distant trails of the enemy fighter’s ion engines growing larger as you begin to gain on them — a feat only possible due to them sticking to tight formation despite one vessel’s damaged engines. You note that Matthew and Sofia’s Foxbat has stopped sparking and leaking smoke, so it seems that fire won’t finish the job you started — a pity.
The two distant fighters appear to be approaching a large hollow asteroid, perhaps hoping to break line of sight to effect repairs. Your eye catches some slight movement at the edge of the oncoming asteroid but when you look back, there’s nothing there.
“Scanner signal is holding steady, Dal!” Kiro comms, “We’ve cleared the last of the minefields and are in pursuit… Uh, but at this range we aren’t as likely to hit them. We should be able to get a lock if you think it's worth expending some ordnance, though.”
“I agree with this assessment.” Coen adds quietly, “I estimate a reduction in weapon accuracy of twenty percent.”
“Ah, the bastards are splitting up!” Cleo snarls beside you, “Ha, like that will save them!”
You watch as the pink and orange hud icons begin to diverge left and right. No doubt hoping to make targeting even more difficult for you.
“The enemy can only use ordnance to fire backwards if they keep fleeing, Sir.” Coen comments. “How shall we engage?”
