>>5330089>>5330074The next day, you wake with a slight ringing in your head, and a strange ache to accompany it. You drink deeply from your water-skin—or, well, as deeply as you dare, now that you are once more in a region where water is a precious commodity. It helps, a little. Mushroom wine has its dangerous after-effects, apparently, even in such small quantities as you consumed!
you set about preparing for the journey ahead, to meet with the dark creepers, spiky-men, or barbed devils. This entails two things, for you, above all else. The first: study of the spellbook which you confiscated from the human mage in the village below the Bloodrise. The second: further training of the Junior Novice, to make the strange chimera battle-ready.
The first is slow going, until you recruit Translator and Novice to aid you. The former helps to make heads-or-tails of the contents, converting the human glyphs surrounding the magical diagrams into something more intelligible to a right-minded Reptilian. The latter… Well, as you told her, you appreciate the Serpent priestess’ intellect and ability, and this includes her grasp of novel magical theory.
“Bah!” she hisses, tail slapping the stone irritably. “This magic is all… Elementalism. Crude, human magic. But… Outside my aptitude.”
“But not unlike my use of flame magic,” you note, blowing a small smoke ring for emphasis.
She huffs, but nods, and acknowledges: “I cannot cast it, but I may be able to help YOU to utilize some of this. Human magic for a part-human.”
You are glad the Translator has left to attend to other matters by this time, but you still glower at her. She rattles quietly, delighting in raising your ire. You sigh, and turn your attention back to your studies, as your enemy-turned-tutor instructs you in the gestures and strange chanting necessary to help summon, channel, and manipulate the raw forces of the elements.
