She shifted uncomfortably. “Well, yes. I’m not used to housing this many guests at once. I didn’t exactly become a very welcoming host after my husband’s passing.” she said. “It even took me a while to completely warm up to Julia’s presence.”

“Still, that’s no excuse.” you said, shaking your head. “Thanks for everything. I doubt there’s anything I can do to repay you, but I’ll try my best. Just name it.”

That very same pleasant smile from before returned to her face, and she reached over the table to grip your hand affectionately. “I’ll keep that in mind, Benjamin. I appreciate your consideration, but you really don’t have to worry about having to repay me for every little thing. You’re not some thug that I casually hired to do my dirty work.”

Oh, man. Was she about to pull out the “friends don’t count favors” speech? You hated owing people favors, even if they weren’t the ones counting them. It made you feel like you were taking advantage of their kindness. Perhaps you were.

“At the very least, we’ve made your mansion into a near impenetrable fortress. So you can sleep soundly at night.”

Cassandra frowned slightly. “Well, I wasn’t terribly worried before, but you do have a point. A little extra security never hurt anyone.”

You gave her a searching look. “And…you’re really not mad about any of it? I’m not a mind-reader like you or an empath like Abe, so I can’t tell.”

She let go of your hand, leaned back in her chair, and let out a brief sigh. “I won’t say it didn’t bother me to a certain degree, but it more or less lines up with my goals.” she admitted, her smile growing a bit somber. “I don’t have many years left under my belt, and I would like to leave something for people to benefit from in the future. If this old house can protect them, then I would see no problem with letting them use it.”

Your stomach clenched at the thought of a world without Webb in it. She had already done so much for you in only a few months, and she didn’t expect anything in return. It somehow seemed unfair that criminals like the Chameleon could go on living, while sweet old ladies like her would be checking out ahead of time.

You wondered if Madame Webb could somehow foresee her own demise; whether she could do anything to prevent it from happening. You were about to ask her that very question, when Julia came over to chat with her about something.

Feeling that you missed your chance, you decided to converse with the three of them for a bit. Discussing imminent death was a bit too heavy of a topic for tonight. And so was the next drama bomb that you were about to drop on their heads.

“Oh yeah, and my sister is in fact an alien imposter.” you blurted out.

Her words brought you out of your downward spiral, and you absently wondered how much of that she’d overheard. Then again, if what she was saying was true, she’d have her fill of embarrassing moments in a little while.

Huh. Weird. You were actually considering this, weren’t you? No, wait. Even worse. You’d already made up your mind.

“Okay…I’m ready. Let’s do this.” you declared.

Madame Webb remained silent for what felt like an eternity, before she gestured for you to kneel down. You did so without hesitation. A frail, bony hand caressed the top of your head, and you nearly flinched back reflexively.

Why were her hands so damned cold?

“I have poor circulation, you young punk.” said an irritated voice in your mind.

Whoa! She heard that!?

“Yes, I did. Now stop flooding your mind with useless drivel. I need to concentrate.”

Right. Sorry. Should you…clear your mind, or-

“That won’t be necessary. I will do it for you. All you have to do is let me.”

How’re you supposed to do that?

“Don’t fight it. You’ll start to feel your limbs growing heavier, and your brain will begin to feel numb in some places. When you start to feel that…try not to panic.”

Gotcha. Try not to…panic…

You don’t know how long you were out for, but it didn’t take very long for you to figure out that something wasn’t right. For a while now, you’ve been watching an accelerated slideshow of your life up until this point. Your failures and your fumbles. Your trials and your triumphs. The little moments you’d taken for granted as a kid. The way your dad would look at you without a face full of disappointment. The way your mom would love you unconditionally, no matter what you said or did. The way your brother would trail after you because of how you beat the shit out of his bullies. The your…

Huh. Something was…missing here. There was supposed to be something—someone else here. Someone important. You just couldn’t put your finger on who or what-

“Benjamin.”

Who the fuck was that!?

You turned your head back and forth, struggling to find the source of the voice. It was coming from everywhere, all at once! Somewhere beyond the endless blank space that surrounded you.

“Benjamin, listen to me. This is important!”

Your breathing slowed, and you tried your damndest to look for a way out of this weird place without seeming too obvious.

“You were right. There truly is something wrong with your memories.” the voice said. “Something, or someone, has ‘overwritten’ them.”

Oh. Well that didn’t sound good.

“Don’t worry.” the disembodied voice reassured you. “Your original memories are still wholly intact. Think of it like someone layering a cake with icing. The flavor is different, but its base composition hasn’t changed much at all.”

For the time being, you put your phone away to give yourself a moment to think. You glanced at Madame Webb’s astral projection, which was conversing with Julia near the stairs.

“Hey,” you began, approaching the two as Julia began to climb the stairs. “I’m sorry about all this. It must be a massive headache for you. For both of you.”

Both women turned to look at you, but the older of the two was the only one who seemed unimpressed.

“My sisters says that I tend to get a little controlling when it comes to protecting loved ones.” you said, rubbing the back of your neck awkwardly.

“Oh, only a little?” Cassandra said in a sarcastic tone.

“I said I was sorry. And I’m telling you this in advance, but it’ll probably happen a few more times tonight…”

“Of course not. Why shouldn’t it?” she said, not dropping the sarcastic tone. “Would you like the deed to my estate before, or after you bring a dangerous creature into my home?”

You winced at that. You couldn’t deny that you deserve the what and shade coming your way. Unlike W.A.N.D, Webb’s never screwed you over in any way. And the two of you aren’t exactly close friends. You’re definitely not close enough to just barge into her home, unannounced, and demand that she let you use her mansion as a base for your monster hunting escapades.

“I’m not going to keep apologizing, because I’m not backing down from this.” you boldly proclaimed. “Instead, I’ll owe you a huge favor in the future. And you get to call it in whenever you want.”

“How charitable of you.” she said in an almost flat tone. “Truly, I am blessed on the night of this ‘sacred hunt’.”

Anger welled up within you then, and you could see Julia hurrying her footsteps in order to create some distance between you and her.

“I’m not just doing this for my own health, or to stroke my ego!” you exclaimed. “This is the only way to get Cindy’s voice back. And if what I’m reading is accurate, then everyone would be better off without the creature responsible for taking it.”

“Miss Moon is still very capable of living a fulfilling life, even with a disability.” she reasoned. “She is a bright young girl, with boundless energy. And I can see that she has made significant progress in learning sign language. You do not need to risk-”

“But it’s not the same!” you argued. Why couldn’t she see that? “Wouldn’t you want to get the use of your legs back, if all it took was killing some evil monster?”

It was as if your words hit Madame Webb like a physical force. For a moment, she just balked at you, and you prepared yourself for the scathing retort that would no doubt follow. But it never came.

Such a task requires astral projection if I want a clear image of where the Spider-Totems are.” she explained. “Day-by-day, I would have to send out consciousness to scan for these totems. I wouldn’t perceive them as ‘blank-spots’ as you’ve probably come to suspect. However, there would almost certainly be a location that the Totemic Deities would prevent me from entering. If I can find that…”

“Then you can figure out where they’re hiding!” you concluded.

“It’s possible.” she replied, not trying to get your hopes up. “But it would be rather time consuming. Not to mention exhausting…” she muttered under her breath.

“I’d start with everyone who knew about the research on the engineered spiders.” you continued, pretending not to hear her. “Dr. Connors thought it was likely that someone’s trying to genetically engineer their own super soldiers. So, that sort of narrows it down to lab guys and greedy execs.”

“Ah, yes. That truly narrows it down.” Cassandra said, with more than a little sarcasm. If she could still use her eyes, you were certain that she’d be rolling them right about now.

“We can also try to look into the Goblin.” you suggested. “The Russians are working against him. And while I’m not entirely sure of whether it was only because of that shield, I feel like they still might have beef with him. There’s a decent chance that the Chameleon might be disguising himself as one of his lackeys.”

It wouldn’t be the hardest thing in the world. Even you pulled it off for a little while.

“I suppose it would be possible to put him under my personal surveillance. Julia would need to take over some of my other responsibilities, but I should be able to keep track of him where there are no security cameras to make use of.” she boasted. “The difficult part would be investigating each and every one of his lackeys. Sifting through their thoughts and keeping track of them would take a not insignificant amount of my time to do so. I recommend choosing where you would like me to begin my search.”

Damn. You were sort of hoping that she could explore each option. Choosing just one would seriously slow down your progress.

“Alternatively,” Madame Web continued. “We could request that Julia pick up the trail of another one of your suspects. I wouldn’t have her devote all of her time to this, of course. She has an important job to do here, and I would feel much more comfortable with her focusing on her primary role while I am…indisposed.”

You just shrugged. Can’t blame a guy for trying.

“So, I hear you’re a telepath. What made you want to spy on me of all people?” you asked, stepping further inside the room. “My life didn’t get interesting until about a month ago.”

“I sensed you as soon as you were chosen as a Spider-Totem.” Madame Web declared, projecting her voice throughout the entire room. “It came as a shock to me, at first, but I knew instantly that you were the one. We have a powerful bond. A psychic connection, even.”

You raised an eyebrow at that. Powerful bond? You don’t even know this lady.

Madame Web let out a weary sigh, and you suddenly remembered that she could hear your thoughts. “Imagine my disappointment when your first thought is to use your gifts for personal gain. To hurt people for your own benefit. To act without regard for common decency or the sanctity of life.” said Madame Web, shaking her head. “Such a shame. Such…a waste.”
