"Yeah, it sounds like you can toss a ring finger and just about any other bone in the fire and expect something to appear. Is there a limit to how many I can have at once? Do they eat? Where do they come from?"
Babs glanced down at her book again and sighed. "Let's see…food is generally a no, but there are a decent number of exceptions, the fleshier the hungrier in my experience. Imps yes, golems no, puppet spirits no. There's a lot out there though. You hear stories of blood suckers, age stealers, even a one that just needs sunlight. The ones that do eat have the advantage of being able to hunt their own food, usually."
"Where do they come from? They're not just appearing from nothing, are they?"
Babs shrugged. "Couldn't tell you. You hear a lot of theories, pits of the netherworld, other worlds, minions of the gods. Doesn't matter to me. As for how many you can have, the total level of your summons can’t exceed your own, five little ones, or one bigger one in your case.”
“Is Bruno a summons?”
Babs laughed. “He’d be pretty grouchy to hear the suggestion. Bruno is a familiar, which is similar I suppose, it draws from the same limitation as total summons. But familiars are creatures found in our world, bonded to a mage, given power by that bond. It’s a bond of trust, if I feel like you’ve established such a bond I’ll offer my services, assuming you haven’t discovered the magic yourself by then.”
“Good to know. I’ll keep an eye out for faithful hounds.”
