Slowly, carefully, you pulled out another plate, cut out a nice big slice of cake, placed a fork on it, and slid it towards an empty seat. Your sister’s eyes tracked the plate perfectly, before returning her gaze to you, your brother and your nephew.

The tense silence stretched for what felt like an eternity, until Vic made a move towards the table, her expression unreadable.

You were about to utter an apology, when your sister sat down at the table and grabbed the fork. You and your brother exchanged satisfied grins, but Peter still had an uneasy look on his face.

“Does this mean we’re not in trouble?”

Vic's face darkened as she regarded your nephew, and then the rest of you. Thankfully, Richard jumped in to put the fire out before things got out of hand.

“Pete, do you remember what your uncle said to me earlier?” Richard asked.

“Uh…’shut up and eat’?”

Richard tousled his hair and gave him a proud smile.

“See? I knew you were a fast learner.”

“Were you guys really about to eat this whole thing without me?” Vic asked, her expression caught somewhere between incredulous and offended.

“No. Of course not…”

Your tone wasn’t the least bit convincing. And your statement was undercut even further when your eyes traveled conspicuously to the left to stare at a particularly interesting stain on the wall.

“Feel free to take another slice, if you want.” you offered.

Your sister gave you a flat look.

“You’re lucky that this is my favorite bakery.” Vic said, stabbing her slice with a fork.

“Do you have any other favorite places?” Pete asked optimistically.

Vic gave him an indulgent smile.

“I do. Maybe we can run through my favorite spots before I have to leave for my ‘trip’.”

She gave you and Rich a meaningful glance, and a mix of complex emotions ran through you. On one hand, you were happy that your sister was finally able to have an adventure of her own, and you were confident that Van and Blackjack could do a decent job of protecting her. On the other hand, this would be your first time spending so much time apart from her ever since your memories were altered to perfectly fit her in your life.

And while these emotions were too tangled for you to properly process at this very moment, you could at least smother them with cake for tonight.

The rest of the night flew by in a blur, with you and your siblings watching a silly animated movie with Peter while drinking and mercilessly picking it apart. At some point, Richard put your nephew to bed, and the three of you talked well into the night before passing out on the couch.

When you woke the next morning, you were alone in the living room. Without waking you, the other two got up, turned off the tv, covered you with a blanket, and then retired to their own rooms.

There was another brief pause, after which the voice of Va Nee Gast answered the phone in your sister’s stead.

“Hello, Ben.”

“Hey, Van. Thanks for coming out. How much of that did you…?”

“I got the general idea. You want my help to defeat someone vastly more powerful than yourself. Or at least, thwart his plans.”

“Well, I don’t know about ‘vastly’...”

Van just plowed right through, pretending as if you hadn’t said anything.

“Ben, this is an extremely public event that is taking place. If I show myself now, there is a good chance that the world will learn of my existence once more. There will be no going back after that. Are you certain that your allies can protect me from your world’s governments? Because if not, then I will have no choice but to assume another identity and go into hiding again.”

What would happen to Vic if she did that? Would she be erased? Could Pete handle losing his aunt? Could the Parker clan handle losing such an integral part of the family, even if it had all been an illusion from the beginning?

“I promise. I won’t let anything happen to you.”

For a while, Van didn’t respond. You were starting to wonder whether she had hung up on you, until she let out a long sigh. It was so unlike her that you had to wonder whether the expression had come from her or Vic.

“Very well, then. I suppose it had to happen sometime.”

“I’m sure they’ll change their opinion of you when they see you saving lives out there.”

“We shall see. Where would you like to meet?”

Several minutes later, you, Gwen and Van emerged out of thin air and onto a street that you didn’t recognize. It was absolutely covered in sand, which was a good sign! It meant that Flint had been through here. And judging by the piles of scrapped Doombots, he’d been cleaning house.

As if you had conjured him by thinking of his name, Flint’s sand form materialized in front of you. He was colorless and lacking in definition, but it was undeniably him.

“There you are! It’s about time you-”

He froze. His gaze was now firmly locked on Van. She was wearing a strange yellow jumpsuit that you’d never seen before, but it was clear to anyone who knew Vic personally that this person shared her exact facial features. The only difference being her unusual hair and skin color.

She gave him a firm nod.

“Flint Marko. It is good to see you. You have my thanks for lending my alter your protection.”

Flint’s jaw tensed. He wore a complicated expression on his face, as if he was unsure of how to address her. Then, his eyes flitted over to you, almost as if to ask whether her being here was a good idea or not. You nodded slightly.

At first, you thought about calling a specialist, but then you remembered that you had the next best thing on speed dial. And seeing as how this was an emergency, it somehow felt fitting for you to have this particular person set as your emergency contact. Like, what could be more urgent than an army of demons hiding below the surface of a city?

Nodding to yourself, you committed the plan to action by calling your alien step-sis.

“Hey, Ben. What’s up? Enjoying your trip?”

“Hey, Vic. For the most part, yeah. I’m meeting a lot of interesting people over here. I went to a spa, saw Cirque du Soleil, and even got to see a Dazzler concert in person!”

Victoria inhaled sharply as soon as you mentioned Dazzler, gasping in surprise.

“Shut up! No you didn’t!”

“Yeah, I did! I even managed to get a picture of her.”

Victoria groaned with jealousy.

“Agh! You’re so lucky! I’ve always wanted to go to a Dazzler concert in person, but her tickets sell out so fast. How was it?”

“Well-”

“No, don’t tell me! I bet it was amazing! If I knew, I would’ve come with you!”

“Sorry. I didn’t find out until the last minute. I’ll bring you with me during her next tour. Until then, I hope you’ll accept this peace offering.”

You sent her the picture you and Ana took with Dazzler. Your sister let out a loud squeal that forced you to pull the speaker away from your ear.

“OH MY GOD, IT’S REALLY HER! I’m so jealous! Wait…who’s this girl next to you?”

“I’ll tell you later. I need to talk to ‘Van’ real quick. It’s kind of an emergency.”

“Oh? Is everything alright?”

The concern in your sister’s voice was clear, so you tried your very best to downplay the severity of the situation.

“Yeah, I’m fine. I just stumbled upon some alien tech, and I wanted her opinion on something.”

“Oh…okay, I’ll go get her. Don’t hang up before I come back, though.”

“I’ll be here.”

“Alright. Give me a minute.”

There was silence on the other end of the line for a minute or two. And when Victoria spoke again, it was in a tone that you were unfamiliar with.

“Hello.”

“Heya, Van. How goes it?”

“That is not my name?”

She wasn’t so much irritated as she was confused.

“Well, it’s easier than saying your full name, so I’m thinking of using it from now on.”

You thought you heard a small sigh from the other end of the line.

“If you must. I assume that this was not the true purpose of your call.”

“Right you are, Van. You see, I happened to stumble upon a pair of Nega Bands on one of my most recent adventures, and I wanted to ask you a few questions about them.”

After a brief pause, Victoria responded, a bit of awe creeping into her usually clipped, dry tone.

“Truly? How did one find its way to Earth?”

Eventually, once the excitement had died down a bit, and everyone went to go pack their bags and make preparations for the trip, you called your sister and asked her whether Cindy and her new friend could hang out at her place.

Just as you’d suspected, she agreed to the arrangement and informed you that she and Peter would be staying in the house while they were there. You didn’t tell her anything about the Vegas trip, of course, seeing as how she was prone to worrying about every little thing. But in this case, it was probably warranted. You knew very little about these people that you were going to be doing business with. You didn’t know how they operated, or how they treated outsiders, so it made sense to keep Victoria far away from them, where she couldn’t be hurt or used as leverage against you.

You relayed the information back to Cindy, and she thanked you for your efforts. You’d have to put some money on a gift card for her to use before you left, just in case. You didn’t plan on leaving the city for an incredibly long time, but anything could happen in this crazy ass world. Like alien invasions, and rampaging giant monsters.

And this time, you wouldn’t have the luxury of leaning on the plethora of superheroes present in just this state. You didn’t even know if Vegas had heroes!

Hopefully, The Family had a solution to such problems. Silvermane and Ana seemed to think they were bad news, so you thought it was safe to assume as much.

The following day, you received a message from Anastasia informing you that her father had agreed to let you and her go along with your plan, and that she was making preparations for your trip. You probably had a few days before it would be time for you to leave.

What would you do until then?

>Start workshopping some new inventions and equipment that you might need on your trip. At the very least, you and the Prowler won’t have to wear your masks the entire time.
>Do as much research on The Family as you can before you have to leave. (Rollo/ Roberto Da Costa/ Gloria Munoz/ Mr. Delgi)
>Arrange a meeting with Thomas Edison and the rest of the Desperados.
>Check in with the Parker family and make sure that they don’t need anything before you leave.
>Go out shopping for some fancy clothes for your trip.
>Try to make amends with the Wild Pack. You recently found a way to contact them, and would like to smooth over any grievances they might still have with you.

“Sure, thing. What’s so special about her?” she asked.

“I don’t know yet. She came asking around about the vampire case concerning Cindy’s parents and we managed to guilt her into leaving.” you admitted. “It could be nothing, but the timing of it was way too convenient. I need to make sure that she isn’t getting paid off by the Chameleon, or subtly manipulated in some way.”

“Alright, I’ll look into it as soon as I can.”

“Great. Keep me posted.”

You hung up and silently prayed that you were just being paranoid. Some part of you was simultaneously surprised and disappointed that Pandora’s division hadn’t done a better job of covering up the whole debacle. You had assumed that that was the reason why the cops weren’t making a genuine effort in looking for Cindy. Cults and cover-ups went hand-in-hand, after all.

Seeing as how you still had some time before Pandora got back, you decided to make good on that promise of checking in on your sister. Or at least, who you thought was your sister.

To your surprise, she answered almost immediately.

The voice that answered on the other end was cold, clipped and cautious, but the identity of the speaker was undoubtedly Victoria.

“Hello?”

Maybe now would be a good time for you to get some answers for some of your more pressing questions.

>”Where are you? Rich and Flint are looking for you. You should call them after this.”
>”Are you okay? Has anyone else tried coming after you?”

That comment earned you a venomous glare from the helpless Russian agent. Victoria’s expression on the other hand was more…unreadable.

Turning your attention back on Vic, you took another step towards her and leaned in close. “We’ll talk about this later, Vic. I didn’t want to bring this up in a situation like this.” you said in a hushed tone.

She exhaled slowly, readjusting her grip on Peter and lowering her eyelids slightly. “Neither did I.” she admits. “If I’m being entirely honest, I was hoping that it wouldn’t come up in conversation at all.”

You could understand that. In a way, you were both in a bit of an awkward spot. The Parker clan had secrets carefully stacked on top of one another, and out came the Chameleon, a ruthless monster who had no qualms about trying to tear apart everything you’ve built here.

And now that you thought about it, Vic was behaving in far too calm a manner for someone standing face-to-face with an unknown masked metahuman. It should’ve come as more of a shock that she had probably deduced your identity with the fact you’d given her, but you’d always known that she was plenty smart.

It did come as a disappointment, though. You wanted her to at least be a little bit surprised.

“Can you look at people’s memories?” you asked. “Because that asshole is the one behind this and other attacks that are happening. It makes sense that he’d know how to stop it.”

You pointed to the Chameleon, still squirming and reaching for a handgun that had fallen a few feet away. Your first instinct was to glue it to the ground so that he couldn’t use it, but upon closer inspection, you realized that it was a really fucking fancy piece.

The Colt 1911’s gold and black engravings were almost mystifying in their elaborate design. It was clear that someone had put a lot of work into this thing.

And right beside it was a sleek, black CZ 75B.

“Hello, beautiful…!” you muttered, snagging both weapons and catching them neatly in both hands to examine them more closely.

A faint “whooshing” sound drew your attention away from your latest acquisitions, and suddenly, Vic was on the other side of the platform, gently leaning Peter against a metal duct. And in the next instant, she was standing right beside the Chameleon!

Did she just teleport!? Does that mean she…?

“Did you teleport Rich and Flint somewhere else when you were attacked?” you asked.

“No, that was someone else’s doing.” she replied without turning around. “It was a blonde woman. She had tried to grab me and Peter along with the others, but Flint and Richard were faster.”

There was a chance that she could be lying, but she wouldn’t have shown her ability if she had any intention of hiding it from you.
