The Armigers acted as the Vanguard for the Knight Detachment that Fredric was leading. Many of them were either nobility of the lowest of household or commoner men who were found able enough to operate the Machines of the Fallen God. It was rare but sometimes the Armiger’s riders would see themselves promoted to that of a proper noble if they are not found wanting. Such a thing normally took a life of service and could only be achieved by the age of fifty.
That was how it normally happened Navaros, Fredric teased. For among those of house Borgius if one showed themselves noble, capable, and skilled enough they can be lifted into the nobility by age thirty. Such was the reason why the Armigers of Borgius tended to serve them much better than their fellows in Navaros.
It also meant that these men were more willing to seek out glory and become the vanguard. For being the vanguard means that you have a very rich chance to fight against the enemy and gain first blood against them. If one were to down a Knight single handedly, well, they would likely be awarded a Knight Warden similar to the one that Fredric rode.
This was the reason the Spearhead formation was valuable as the Armigers would slowly start to dwindle either from enemy fire or they would find fights within the streets worth fighting. From his occulars the Prince watched as three of his Armigers were ultimately fallen by the foul sorcery of the Xenos but many others took the chance to avenge their lower noble brethren with a righteous fury.
For himself it was focusing on the firing of his Avenger Gatling cannon. There was no reason to neglect the firing of such a weapon when the Mechanicum had ample supply of his caliber and the Xenos could barely defend themselves against his attacks.
There was even the occasional mech fighting amongst the Xenos. These Mechs would feel the wrath of not only his Avenger Gatling Cannon but also that of the Armigers and Castellans that followed along behind him.
As they ran Fredric was getting the occasional sight of the massacre that the Navaros were creating. It was thanks to their distraction however that neither of the Xenos God Machines turned their ire against his house and for that he was grateful to the idiots. He would also be a fool to not admit that at least Prince Alexander, his equal in rank and sister machine, was cutting his swathe through the enemy.
Hopefully Fredric would come across some foes. Of course he did not want anyone to interrupt his scheme but he needed to have more honor than the Armigers that he was ordering around.
