“You know, your research could have some interesting applications in the medical field. Like, for treating heat exhaustion and hypothermia. Have you ever considered that?” you said.
The skin around Edison’s beak curved upwards slightly, leading you to believe that he was trying to smile. You think you read somewhere that birds don’t have the necessary facial muscles required to frown or smile, so it was a strange gesture. Maybe this guy modded himself to make emoting a bit easier, or maybe it was just a product of his mutated nature.
“You know, I had the same thought. It might take some time, though. When they see the primary candidates for my invention, they’ll undoubtedly realize who I used for my test group, and if my research progresses too quickly, it’ll create some unfortunate assumptions about the ‘ethical’ and ‘moral’ implications of my research.” he explained. “Sometimes, it’s better to take your time when pushing the boundaries of modern medicine. It may sound counter-intuitive, but no one cares how smart you are if your experiments bother their conscience.”
So you’d probably have to wait a while before you could play up that angle of his research. It did make sense in a weird way, but even you were getting a bit frustrated by the lack of progress that was imposed on the bird-man due to other people’s suspicions and expectations.
“Would you be willing to compare notes with some of our people?” you asked. “Just to make absolutely sure that your research wouldn’t result in any…unfortunate accidents.”
The Inventor narrowed his eyes slightly and scratched at the side of his neck. “That depends on who it is you’re planning on sharing my research with. As it were, I’d very much like to meet with them before committing to such an exchange of sensitive information.”
You honestly couldn’t blame him for being cautious. Some guy you just met asks you to share your life’s work with other people that you don’t know well enough to form an opinion on. It’d all sound incredibly shady.
“That’s fair. It's just a suggestion.” you quickly amended. “Do you have any preferred clientele, or will you take jobs from just about anyone? Are there any hang ups that I should know about?”
He paused for a moment, hummed thoughtfully, and tapped his claws against the plated chrome in his leg. “I don’t make weapons of mass destruction. They draw too much attention, and are far too easy to trace back to their original creator depending on the materials that were used. I won’t accept or complete a job if I believe that it might expose me to an unnecessary amount of danger.”
