Bennett’s ability to self-heal was going to turn this into a battle of attrition, and it would be one in which he held the advantage. Despite having suffered damage from your attacks, he showed no signs of slowing down or losing confidence. And while you were lucky during your first engagement with him, there was no telling what might happen if he activated his Crest again.

“The Goddess is on my side, Witch!” Bennett declares, knocking the string back on his Hero’s Relic once more. “She will deliver to me victory, and by her hand-“

Your attention is suddenly caught elsewhere. From above the tower, behind where Bennett is standing, something in the air is descending towards you at a remarkable speed. Though your vision was obscured by the harsh sun, you could see the wings of a pegasus flapping fiercely. Your first thought was that Anemone and Stormy had survived their fall and were returning to assist you. But as the figure drew closer, you realized that this creature didn’t possess ebon wings, but white ones. Bennett continued his ranting, unaware of his impending misfortune. The pegasus’ rider leaped off their mount at the last moment, and plunged downward, spear in hand.

“GAH!” Bennett cries. Kate has impaled the Patriarch with Gae Bolg, plunging the spear through his back and out his chest. Bennett grabs onto the weapon in shock, and before Kate can rip the thing out, he teleports once more. This time, he lands directly in the middle of the three of you.

You can’t help but wonder if this was a mirage. A cruel trick played on you by the scorching sun and desert heat. But in truth, Bennett is standing there clutching his wound, and Kate has turned her spear not against you, but him.

It was now or never. You would put an end to this man’s madness here.

Before Ingrid can offer up any further protest, you make your exit, flying towards the damaged clock tower. Travelling over the ruined city, you’re given a first-hand view of Enbarr’s devastation. The shining jewel of the Empire was now a smoldering heap. Buildings were toppled, roads were smashed, and corpses lay strewn about everywhere you looked. You knew that the Knights of Seiros were left with no choice. Had they not invaded, further lives would have been lost as the war continued. Still, it was hard to take any joy in seeing your country’s capital sacked.

You arrive at the clock tower. With its top having been blown off by your Bolting spell, you’re given a clear view of the building’s inside. Its uppermost floor is a mess, covered in detritus and stone that collapsed during the explosion. Within the debris, you can make out two figures, as well as a pegasus. You and Beathan descend into the tower’s rubble. Winona was lying against a wall, watching you. Next to her was Kate. Rex’s spear, the counterpart to Gungnir, Gae Bolg, was strapped across her back.

“Hello, Blair.” Winona coughs. She tries to stand, but struggles. Only with Kate’s support is she able to make it to her feet. “Long time no see. That was quite the trick you pulled, tracking my Bolting. I take it that with you here, the others have fallen in battle?”

>You nod. “I defeated both Aubert and Bradley. The Hellwings have been routed, but not before Bradley ordered those with families to flee. The battle is over, Winona. The Blackwings won. Surrender, and I swear that no further harm will come to you. You’ll be treated with dignity under my watch.”

“Very well.” Winona nods, extending her hands out to you. “I don’t plan on resisting. You defeated me fairly and proved your strength. Any grudge I may have held against you is settled. That’s how your brother would have wanted it.”

You’re almost surprised by how easily Winona surrenders herself to you. Though she was only a tactician, she was still a Hellwing, and Rex’s lover at that. You half-expected you’d have to bring her in by force, kicking and screaming. As if reading your thoughts, she speaks up.

“It’s not a trap.” Winona says, placing her hands on her stomach. “Even were I not currently playing host to another, I don’t believe for a second I’d be able to win against you.”

>It’s only then that you notice the considerable bump on Winona’s stomach. “Is…that what I think it is?”

“Yes. Any day now you’ll be an aunt. My lord’s legacy lives on.”

“Coming here makes me think about her a lot as well. I keep dwelling on what you said she told you back at Gronder. I suppose she has every right to want to kill us.”

When we’d found out you’d been kidnapped by Monica, there was no one in the Black Eagles that could hold either her or myself back from coming to rescue you. We charged in alone and fought Martha together because we loved you so much and were afraid to see you lose your life. And while I got to continue walking alongside you, Kate ended up left behind.”

You recall the night the two of you fled the monastery. Things had erupted into chaos so quickly that you hadn’t even had the time to find Kate. The two of you thought she’d never abandon the Empire and wrote it off as pointless to try and convince her to follow you. You and Corrine had chosen to become deserters, abandoning your kingdom and risking being hunted for the rest of your days. At the time, you felt it would be wrong to ask Kate to make that same choice. Not when she didn’t have the same insight into the Agarthans that you did. But now, you weren’t so sure.

“Since she couldn’t follow you, she found another d’Rusalka to attach herself to. And then you killed him. And in a manner that she likely found reprehensible as well. Double teaming him with a Pegasus Knight that was your foe during our school year?” Corrine laughs. “Tell me, is it any wonder that she’d want to kill you?”

>“Even if you’re right…she seemed uninterested in hearing anything I had to say back at Gronder. I don’t want to fight Kate, but what choice do I have? The next battle will likely be at Enbarr, and the Hellwings will most certainly be there looking for blood. She’ll undoubtedly want to fight me.”

“If that happens, then please, don’t kill her.” Corrine says somberly. “I don’t want her to die without us trying to reason with her.”

>“And what if we can’t? She’s had far more time to grow to hate us than love us.”

“I at least want to try this time.” She clenches her jaw.

“Commander Blair, I presume? A pleasure to finally make your acquaintance.” He says, heave a large axe onto his shoulder.

Another flash, and another Wyvern Rider has appeared. Messy blonde hair obscures half of his face, and he stares down at you with contempt. He holds a strange sword behind his head that bears a passing resemblance to the same sort of Runesword that Clay uses.

“That’s her? She doesn’t look like she’ll offer me much fun.”

A third flash, and another rider. This wyvern looks stranger than the others, appearing more serpent like. Its rider is a dignified looking blonde man clutching a spellbook in one hand.

“Witch…your treachery ends here. My magic will undo you.”

A fourth flash. This time, a pegasus appears, and you’re completely surrounded. You instantly recognize the rider. Her face completely devoid of emotion, she offers you only a short wave.

“Hi Blair.” Kate says.

“Warp magic? Winona must have grown impatient with me.” Rex says. “Best not to keep her waiting any longer. We do have a job to do, after all. Blair, allow me to introduce you to the Hellwings’ Aces. I believe you’ll find each one of them to be more than a match for you.” He turns his attention towards them. “Leave the Galatea girl to me! I will brook no intrusion on my hunt. As for my sister, one of you can deal with her. The rest can begin the attack!”

Rex suddenly rushes forward, swinging Gae Bolg directly at Ingrid, who manages to meet the attack with Luin just in time. Both riders enter the melee with each other, flying off into the distance, while you remain trapped in the middle of the four Aces.

“We shall leave the honor of choosing your opponent to you, Witch.” The first knight says. “It matters not to us who lays the finishing blow on you.”

The rest of the Hellwings begin moving forward, and the Blackwings follow suit.

Despite the sounds of looting and murder happening just outside the castle walls, the room became suddenly eerily quiet. The Blackwing Mercenaries. That band had become somewhat of a reviled topic amongst the Hellwings. They’d earned a reputation as the strongest unit of airborne fighters in Fodlan, much to the disapproval of those under Rex’s command who believed that distinction belonged to them. That their leader was also a traitor to the Empire earned them no shortage of scorn. There were many in the Hellwings who’d relish the chance to fight them, if only to prove their superiority to what they saw as a motley band of sellswords. Still, no one ever spoke of them openly. In public, they’d claim it was because the Blackwings were beneath their notice. But the reality was much more complex. The leader of the Blackwings, that reviled traitor who’d abandoned the Empire, was none other than the adopted sister of their beloved commander, Rex d’Rusalka. To this day, not even the four Aces had the courage to ask Rex what his thoughts were on his sister turning traitor.

“Fool!” Rene spat. “Do not sully our lord’s ear with that filth. As if mere mercenaries could measure up to our superior mi-“

“You’re saying Blair will be at Gronder?” Rex asks, head resting on his fist. Suddenly, a great grin crept onto his face, his sharp teeth on display for all to see. It was a look that everyone in the room was intimately familiar with. He’d only looked like this when there was worthy prey on his mind. “Winona, inform the general that he may continue looting Charon on his own. The Hellwings must be off to Gronder with great haste. We wouldn’t want to miss out on all the fun, would we?”

You’re dismayed as you watch the smile on Dorothea’s face slowly fade. “To be honest, I don’t know. She fought in the Siege of Garreg Mach under Edelgard. And she took your leaving pretty hard. The last I’d heard of her; she was still fighting for the Empire. But as to the specifics, I really couldn’t say. I haven’t seen her ever since then.”

Your conversation is interrupted by an approaching soldier from Ferdinand’s contingent of soldiers, who salutes his commander before relaying his message. “My Lord, the supplies have been secured, and we are ready to depart!”

“Finally! I hope to never visit this dreadful place again. Blair, Corrine, let us continue this conversation back home, at Garreg Mach. We need to mobilize our men and get out of here.” Ferdinand says.

Dorothea clasps your hands. “Yes! I know you’re a big shot mercenary commander now, but please come see us at the monastery!”

>“Of course. Until then.”

The trio departs, leaving you and Corrine alone. She strikes up conversation as the two of you make your way back towards the Blackwings.

“So, what do you think of all this?” Corrine asks you. “Do you really believe that the Professor can turn the tide of this war around? Sure, she’s strong, but she’s still just one woman. She’s up against the entire might of the Empire…not to mention the Agarthans in the background.”

>“It’s as good a shot as any we’ve had. You know that.”

“Of course. But what do we do now? You heard those three back there. They want us to come back and fight alongside them. I must admit, the idea is tempting. But I fear we would be leaving too much left undone were we to join up with the Professor. At least right now. Her focus is on the Empire, which I fear would leave the Agarthans with too much room to operate. And Anemone is still seeking out the identity of the sage hiding out in Ordelia.”
