SIDESTORY
A Stormy Night in Stormwind
The fourth glass of sherry had given Katrana a solid buzz as the storm outside continued to rage. The wind blasted the windows and water rained near horizontally. The sound it made was her companion as she slowly wrote a letter to one of the many nobles requiring her aid.
Katrana was in a bitter mood, it had been just nobles this, nobles that for the past few weeks. The list of things they needed her aid with just kept growing and yet again she had to write a response that eloquently had the same message as before so many times.
Sorry, House of Nobles cannot support your request due to not having budgetary control.
That was a half-truth. They did have the power to present and argue for spending, but all executive power was in King Varian's hands and the King had chosen to just brood. Katrana had tried to get him to sign some papers, but without much success. After the third time of him sending her away and not having even touched the scrolls, Katrana understood to not even try.
She sighed as ink dropped on the letter, creating a smudge that she didn't bother to wipe away. So many things were going against her plans, nothing seemed to stick. Years of careful manoeuvring seemed to have gone to waste.
The door into her study opened, but Katrana didn't even turn her head. She knew who had arrived.
"I am here Mistress." Nalice said and kneeled.
"How is he?" Katrana asked her back immediately and now turned to look at her.
"He is a young man in good physical condition. He will recover, but it will take some time." Nalice said to Katrana, not raising her head one bit.
"You can stand." Katrana responded and turned away once more.
Blasted Fel, the near death of Alric was bad news, she had nearly lost one of her most important allies and someone she wanted personally, to a mistake during training. When she heard the news the first time, she had been heartbroken, shaken to her core and would have lashed out at Nalice if not for an ocean between them. How could she have failed to prevent it from happening in the first place? Alric nearly died and now he has Fel inside him.
Though as days passed and Nalice sent her updates of his condition, her mind slowly calmed down and the need to lash out disappeared. It had been an accident and Nalice had done her best to save Alric's life and then tended him as best as she could. And Katrana knew that what had happened was incredibly rare, very little was known about the heart suddenly stopping.
"You have done well, but I am not fully happy with you." Katrana spoke to her. "Please do not let anything like that happen ever again."
"I understand my Mistress." Nalice said as she stood up.
"Good, how did his studies progress?" Katrana asked and sipped more of her sherry.
