>>5489449I agree that it's a risk. But it is a risk that others in the 40k setting have overcome. Mortals even, not the iron soul of a Primarch, but simply men.
Humanity is the soul, and if the C'tan are to be believed the soul can be accessed via the Brain. "The Materium-Immaterium interface" organ. I believe this because its behind the entire principle of the Mechanicum. Cut off a mans arm and he is still the same man. Replace his heart, and he is himself. Render all his body down until he is little more than a brain in a servo skull jar of fluid, he is the same man. But replace the brain with a machine, and leave the body intact, there lies great risk.
But Cawl proves it doesnt have to be the same physical brain, that the soul can be transferred from one brain to another. Yes thousands have tried and failed, suffering madness and lunacy. But Cawls master succeeded where others fail, and he retains his soul through different forms for 10,000 years.
Antigonus is the most extreme canon version. His body and brain were destroyed but through the miracle of the Ancients, the STC was able to latch onto his soul in digital form. He remained human, or at least his humanity, and when he returned to Mars he was deemed pure. He served the Machine God and aided in the defeat of a Hellforge and the corrupted Daemon Castigator Titan and its legion. A feat worthy of a saint.
It's risk that others have overcome. Still I dont believe we need go that far. The body can become raw nanites, but a safe bet to retain our humanity is to treat the organic brain as sacred. Infuse and shield it with nanites, but do not dispose of it to become pure grey goo.
Humanity is stored in the brain.
