“Get out already!” She shouted, voice echoing into the trees.
A searing line of pain that ripped the breath from her lungs, followed by the curious feeling of relieved tension, of a piece of stretched fabric finally allowed to return to its normal form. Mel choked on the scream that poured from her lungs, then it was gone as quickly as it came, her left arm as empty of ink as the day she was born.
There was a soft flutter above her. Shapes darted through the trees, eyes glittered in the dark. Mocking caws rang out through the trees as her eyes darted from glittering eyes to glittering eyes, counting. Twenty five. She swore under her breath.
Something bellowed out in the dark, loud enough to shake branches. A crunch of undergrowth, and another, then a form emerged just out of the light, something twice her size with curving bull horns, but glimpses of human elements as well. A minotaur.
“Arx.” The spear of ice shot up from the ground into her waiting hand and she kicked it loose from the ground, giving the weapon a gentle spin in her hands. She had to survive today. She had to survive tomorrow. She was going to find a way out of this place, and every step of the way she was going to get the strength she needed to take the world by the throat.
Hooves slammed on the ground, horns thrust into the light at a charge.
