The trip to the alien region took two days, which was quite a bit of time for those who were in the fleet. It meant that they needed to quickly start their construction of the new base. With that in mind probes and scans were sent across the entire region in search of what they seeked.
Such a thing was easily found in the form of the largest asteroid in the system, herefor marked as Station A-1 of System 243. The asteroid was one of the largest in the system but was still within the asteroid belt that almost all star systems held. This meant that the Mechanicum ships held both cover against enemy attacks and a place that can easily be turned into a manufactorium.
The Mechanicum wasted no time in transforming the rock.
Drill attached servitors were launched like torpedos into the rock and started to carve through it. A simple method they commited was sending three of them in a burst at one piece of the rock and having them all drill parallel to each other. This meant that when the demolition adepts arrived they were easily able to carve hallways that were large enough to accommodate Knights.
In order to get enough processed materials two of the Tartarus Class escorts were scraped and turned into the walls and hatches that kept the place atmospheric, contained, and safe from the outside.
Estimates showed that the Xenos would need to throw at least fifteen ships worth of might into the rock in order to crack it. This meant it would be much easier for them to simply take it by force of arms than through complete annihilation.
This was in the favor of the Mechanicum as it meant they won’t be able to easily crack what was slowly becoming a fortress filled with turrets and two long-range batteries. It has become unignorable but easily a place where none could easily take it.
Reinforcements, mainly recruits from the logistics and secondary fleet, allowed the numbers to be raised to fifty ships. Others will come throughout the days but just by the number of ships the Mechanicum was going to be short handed.
