-Who is here ? Show yourselves ?
No answer. You then tried to look around, seeing nothing, while your words echoed around.
-Are you cowards ? Show yourselves !
You repeated severely. But nobody answered. You looked at your knights, then at the miners. Since some of your men were not at cover, as many common born soldiers they could not think independently of their commander, they looked around too and you had to admit that nothing tried to kill them. You then decided to take out your shield, then look around a second time, exposing yourself but being ready to raise it. And nothing. Nothing at all. You then decided to move the horses, who could not duck, behind a pile of rocks and to get your men raising their shields, no answer from the invisible enemy, you even had not heard a single footstep. You waited here for ten, then twenty minutes and ordered to get back to the march. Without any new assault, you then asked one of the miners, Data.
-What was that ? Who threw it ?
He answered, raising his shoulders.
-I do not know my lord, maybe stone golems, maybe earth elementals, maybe even a malediction that attacks anyone who tries to travel here.
You continued your way, still wary of any attacker, and more or less one hour after your first attack you heard the same sound, raising your shield and blocking two stalactites thrown horizontally, as if by a ballista, towards you. Or not even a ballista, it flew really in a straight line, you were certain of it. You took some cover a second time, and as before, nothing happened, after ten minutes you ordered to advance anew and were not attacked after this. You still wondered what kind of magic caused this. You addressed a prayer to the lord and continued.
What to say, the underworld was a strange and unpleasant place, with lots of humidity, mushrooms, some glowing ones, sharp rocks, stalactites and stalagmites and it was generally impressive but strange. You still wondered if it lead to hell, you even asked the miners and one of them began to tell that hell was "another dimension" or something like it, you told him that he was sympathetic but asked the name of the pagan priest who knew personnaly the size of hell, perhaps he already had been there. Your joke made your knights laugh but left the locals guessing.
