It was amazing how even in times such as these, children could find a way to let go of the troubles of the world, to let exhaustion trump their anxiety and deliver them to the better days that would surely follow.
Even for Cici, this proves true. Though the hum of power never truly leaves her entirely, seeming to have finally found its home in some as yet undeveloped corner of her mind, it doesn’t spiral out of control as it had during the day. It just leaves her to the quiet, mundane dreams befitting someone of her age, half-realized fragments of memory spun together with snippets of myth to deliver something strange and nonsensical and utterly beautiful that would vanish come morning light.
And morning does come, seemingly all too swiftly. It confirms for the voices that their time riding the waves of Cici’s vision had not been mere moments, but a minimum of several hours, possibly longer, possibly even days. That simple thought sends a chill up their non-existent spines, but they have no means to confirm or refute the suspicion as the formerly still occupants of the chamber are just now beginning to stir.
Vivi is first, surprising no one as she quickly dresses for her mail route in utter darkness, scarcely making a sound. However, she seems to stop as the gears of her mind truly begin to turn, looking first to Cici, then to the voices, then to the window and the skies beyond.
[“What should I do?”] she wonders.
