“The flight plan the convoy head filed with us says that we’ve gotta make a stop before we hit Ulsind,” the Nagai says the day before the journey. On a palm-sized holoprojector, he brings up a map of the local subsector, and highlights the path the convoy would be taking. “We’re dropping out here – System 19A-KJ. Gas giant with nothing more than barren worlds and a few asteroid belts.”
“I thought it would’ve been a straight jump,” opines Ceyla. “And no more than a few hours of transit.”
“Explanation,” offers HK-82, “Due to spatial disturbances, the edges of the Veil Nebula are interfering with hyperspace travel. It was only after careful and deliberate consideration to take the long way around.”
Elba coughs, shaking his head roughly before crossing his arms. Nobody needs a translation to understand that he agrees. Traveling through the nebula would be a navigational hazard. They have the unfortunate tendency to obfuscate senor arrays and interfere with communications.
But what does go unspoken is the fact that System 19A-KJ is the perfect spot for an ambush.
“…we aren’t carrying any cargo, are we?” Trykov suddenly asks. “Insofar as being a part of the convoy. We’re just playing the role of escort.”
He's correct. Much as you’d like to load up the cargo hold, you’d rather keep the ship light. Jettisoning cargo isn’t something you’d see doing if you needed to escape – the ship’s fast enough for that. Space on a ship’s a luxury and a premium, and you’d rather have it in the event of an emergency.
Besides, it’d be the mark of a piss-poor convoy if they had to outsource cargo space.
You nod to each of the crew. “We shouldn’t be anticipating trouble, but I want everyone to be ready for it. That means gunners in the hotseats, ECM cranked up to the maximum, and all the fancy flying that Suzel can pull out of the ship.”
To Ceyla, you place a hand on her shoulder, and come down to her level. “If we need to carry out a boarding action, I want you stay close. No going out of my sight, and no going ahead of me. But the second things get too hot, I want you to run back to the ship. No heroics, understand?”
She nods. “Yes, master.”
You give her a little smile. “I'm not doubting you at all. You've done well for yourself on the Chiller and Dweem-”
“Eugh. Please don’t remind me of the Dweemons.”
"...fair enough."
