Making use of their new watercraft, your Sharpclaws are able to strike out into deeper waters, at first to more effectively spear fish, then, when one particularly gluttonous Sharpclaw is struck by the idea to ensnare fish in nets of woven fiber, to trawl the depths, sweeping up great schools of fish that are soon after swept yet again into your people’s ravenous reptilian maws. As a result, however, prolonged trips out at sea to fish necessitate the preservation of food, with most meat and fruit quickly spoiling or rotting after a couple of days under the heat of the sun and the humid tropical conditions. This unfortunate limitation is, thankfully, overcome when one particularly iron-stomached Sharpclaw attempts to eat a cast-away fish that had spent several days soaking in the briny depths of the ship before his more sensible fellows can stop him. When his friends are surprised when he exhibits no signs of illness, however, several experiments are conducted on the preservative effects of brine, eventually leading to a reliable, if tongue-curling, form of preserved food now considered mandatory by any ship that will be out at sea for longer than a few days.
