Wilhelm nodded and began without hesitation, for he knew he spoke truthfully. "I heard singing. It was so lovely, I felt I must follow it. When I found the maiden, she pulled me under the water." Wilhelm's gaze was kept on Ludolph's blade, and so neither he nor Ludolph saw Mirabel listen from the shadows as he continued. "At first I could not escape her embrace, but when I cried out she set me free."
"And what did you cry out?" Ludolph demanded.
"The name of the maiden Mirabel," said Wilhelm.
